How similar are these two engines? If I were to buy parts from a Mustang shop for a 5.0, would they be compatible with mine?

What parts did you have in mind?

You have GT40P heads which were never factory on any Mustangs, so the exhaust is completely different. Your lower intake is a GT40, flows similar to the 93 to 95 cobra intake. Engine internals are similar, so those could be upgraded, but might be costly.

The heads and intake that you have now are about as good as any ever offered on the Mustangs, but most bolt-ons are not interchangeable.

All front dress parts are different, just like the headers. The Explorer has the best operating system Ford has used on a pushrod V8. The OBDII system is much better than the older operating systems. You can make changes, and retune the PCM to gain original driveability. That includes superchargers, stroking, major cam or compression changes, etc.

The total costs are about the same as the older Mustang combinations. The Explorer is almost a thousand pounds heavier, so always consider the RPM range, and need for low and midrange torque. Don't stick a big cam in it, and think 6000 RPM will make the truck faster. Good luck,

Shhhhh stop giving me more idea's.

What upgrades are you looking at?
Have you checked out some of the upgraded 5.0L Explorer's on this site? from mild to wild man...

Get some headers, a nice exhaust system, and a nice mild cam and your pretty much have a Cobra long block. I know the explorer compression is a little over 9:1 but I have no clue what the Cobra or other 5.0 mustang is.

Virtually all fuel injected 302's ever made have about the same compression. The official numbers are usually under 9:1, around 8.8:1 good luck.

Thanks for the info. What if I were to get a larger throttle body? Would I see much of a difference there?

The stock TB is good for up to about 350 rwhp. Anything else you should upgrade. But a mustang TB won't fit without modification. You have to reverse the way the throttle cable pulls. May take a little time but cheap.
