Clicking Noise when Turning

I have a 2011 Explorer Limited. When turning left or right (usually only when accelerating.. say from a stop sign) there is a clicking noise coming from the front end. I have had it to 2 different shops, both saying it is nothing. I have to believe there is something wrong? Anyone else hear this?

I have a 2013 limited ford explorer and I have a different sound... I have a squeaking noise when turning all the way left or right. I went to my nearest service center and they lubricate the joints... at least that what they said... but now after 3 days it's back again. It's really annoying.

There was a thread on this about some connecting rod going bad early. Check that out, it could be your problem.

Clicking noise when turning on a FWD vehicle is indicative of a failed outer CV joint. Especially when accelerating. The ball that rides in the track of the CV joint is either cracked, the track is cracked or worn and the ball is catching on that area on every revolution of the axle. Also if the boot is torn the lubricant will leak out causing a rough turning joint and clicking will follow.

Welcome to the Forum Yogi Bear.:wavey: Is there a Boo Boo around too? :D
You say you have taken it to 2 different shops, do they include the Ford Dealer? You may still have warranty coverage if you are within the 36K miles limit. It does sound like it could be the CV joints as Dr. Plastic indicated.

By service center do you mean Ford dealer? That is where you should be taking it. You may also want to check out the following thread;

Thanks everyone. I took it to a Ford dealership about 3-4 weeks ago. They claimed they could not hear anything. On Saturday morning, I was driving and kept hearing the noise so I pulled into the local Firestone. They drove it, put it on the rack and said they found a loose exhaust strap that was probably making the noise :hammer: . I will get it into a different Ford dealer this week.. it is driving me crazy!!

I have replaced front axles for that concern at my dealership. That sounds like your issue. The last vehicle took both front axles.

Hi Yogi Bear,

Hi
We also have a 2013 Explorer doing the same thing but ours is on the left (driver) side. What did you have to do to get Ford to fix it? They have had our truck for 2 weeks and they have heard the noise but are saying they cant find it

There is also a recent TSB on clicking noises etc., coming from the front end having to do with the half shafts needing a shim in them....You'll have to search for it, as I don't know the number, but recall the report.....

I have a 2013 Explorer Sport and have noticed the front end clicking when making right turns. The clicks seem to come from the driver's side front wheel. I have a video that shows the problem:

Is this noise similar to what you guys have experienced? If so, what fixed it? Thanks!

Hi rochs918,

I received your PM regarding this concern and passed your info along to your regional customer service manager (CSM). They'll be in touch with you to get this addressed.

Yes...

Your clicking sounds just like ours did. See my video early in this post. At first you had to be moving to make it click and it didn't always happen. Eventually it would do it sitting still and was reproducible 100% of the time. That's when we brought it in.

This is the route our dealership went:

They tried replacing in this order... The strut plate, then the strut bearing and ultimately they ended up replacing the entire strut assembly... which finally fixed the noise.

They had our truck for over a week figuring this out; I hope this info saves you some time!

Ok brought it in to Ford service today. They verified the noise and had it for about 2 hours while we waited. The noise is now gone. Here's what the invoice sheet says they did:

Checked and verified noise
Cleaned rust off the back side of the left front alloy wheel
Aligned brake backing plate
Re-torqued left front drive axle

So we drove it home and it hasn't clicked since. We'll be keeping an eye on it but for now it's gone. Hope this helps anyone else with the same noise.
