so, ive been...what do you call it? Ghosting? anyway ive been researching my problem and have read several articles on this forum. So, I believe I have done everything suggested.
Problem is, it wont start. ive been all over the "no start" thread and looked at everything in order and still no starting.
its a 91 ford explorer 4.0, I replaced the original motor with one from a 96 ranger. the Junk yard showed me the test results for compression and some other seemingly superfluous information. everything seemed good and he seem enthusiastic about the results. i swapped the engines and no start. the problem appears to be electrical as i have intermittent spark, its a strong spark but very random. it has brand new plugs, ive tested others to make sure its not the new plugs, new wires, the coil tested bad at 13kOhm at the primaries (11kOhm was max spec) so i replaced the coil pack, had ICU tested and was good (trying a new one anyway tomorrow), new CPS, TPS, new battery (not for troubleshooting - just didnt have one), made sure there was fresh gas and even put in an octane booster just in case, swapped for a known good IAC valve, bypassed ignition switch and tested ignition switch, one thing troubling is the voltage to the coil secondaries is .05v with ignition on and .15v while trying to start. shouldn't it be more like 5 or 6v?
ive checked all the grounds i could find, no KOEO codes, i have an AutoXray 4000 so any freeze frame or in-situ data you need, i can get you. have good fuel pressure and system holds pressure withing 3psi for a few minutes. it does take a few turns of the key without starting to get pressure up to 40psi, gets to 40psi and holds while starting. no apparent vacuum leaks, wondering if a bad BAP would keep it from starting, does have check engine light on while trying to start (blinks code 11 - system ok), i replaced the crank position sensor and still the same thing. there are several other things ive tried, some i dont remember at the moment and others aren't worth mentioning.
I have two ASE qualified Ford Technitions helping me when they can, but we are all scratching our heads on this one, so if you figure it out you should definately pat yourself on your back, i will if you live near me...id probably hug you and other stuff...
anyway, ill be watching the computer for some1 to reply...

Is the engine harness from the new or old engine? Perhaps there are some wiring issues.

Sounds like you've tried just about everything. As a reminder, you should need 4 things for an engine to start/run.

Compression
Fuel
Spark
Timing

All I can say is don't trust what someone has told you. You gotta know for a fact that each is good. Check one at a time to eliminate possibilities.

Good luck.

yes the wiring harness is the original from the 91 explorer, no sensors or connections would work from the ranger. as far as trusting the compression readings, i really have no choice, the compression i got with a cold engine was 60psi, hopefully that would increase as the engine warms up and the rings expand due to heat, im positive its not a mechanical issue though, because of the random spark. if i have good spark and it still doesnt run then id be thinking about valvs.
happen to know if timing is much different between engines? maybe there is a conflict between what the computer thinks the timing should be and what the crank sensor is picking up or something like that.

OMG dont trust the Ignition control testers at Autozone! just tried that new one and tada! running.
thank you for your reply awood!
im going to go pat myself on the back...and other stuff...
