See, this is how it went: I was crossing the Verde river when BAM, down I go. Hood is under the water, but the trusty explorer makes it to a slightly more shallow water before the engine dies. Thats right, water lock. A couple of hours later, we get her running, plugs, distributer, air intake manifold and all else is cleaned and dried. I have a lot more to do, such as pulling the carpet out and drying it (4 inches of water inside), getting new dif fluids, repacking the front wheel bearings, and checking all the fluids (hopefully I wont have to flush the trans, power steering and all). One good note: No water in the oil. It could have been a lot worse than it was.

Pics are here: www.geocities.com/arsoul2/river.html

Any one have any suggestions as to what else I should check?

TALK TO SINJIN!
if you remember his Explorer went swiming too!

Yeah

Fabricate a snorkel somehow....try it out ...then let us know if it works.....if so give us all instructions on how you did it LOL

Well you asked

Check your emergency brake cable and abs system. If the e-brake cable corrodes, you'll put it on one day, and it won't release.

I grew up two hundred yards from the Verde and have first hand knowledge of its vehicle swallowing abilities. Although it may appear shallow what you can't see is the 6-12 inches of ground water in most areas. The main thing I learned from that river, NEVER trust it. One minute the bed is solid the next it will swallow you whole.

Well I wrote to ARB and...

It's sad.......here is their response....(I was looking to get rid of the $1000..it was burning a hole in my pocket)...

Hi Karol,

Unfortunately we don't offer the snorkel for the Explorer, and I'm told
there's nothing on the horizon. The good news is that many have used the
series 80 Land Cruiser snorkel, part number SS80HF, with little
modification.

snorkel

you know that is exactly the model i was thinking would work as far as placement and such, but i can't see hittin' $392 for a snorkel.

let us know if you do it.

I can't believe it

Here I am positively mulling over whether I should bother trying to comfabulate something and here it is..... someone beat me to it... it's a Ranger and well close enough..... and the guy at ARB did say this part would most likely fit.......Well here we go again:)

Did you check out the funny pvc one further down on that thread? Man oh man that's funny stuff. LOL Creative as hell but funny none the less.

about a month ago i was crossing a seemlngly shallow stream off of a larger river when down went my hood. The engine immediately died. I ended up bending a rod and smashing the piston down against the crank. A month later and lots of work and money, I have a rebuilt engine and its all back together. I just can't wait to get it broken in and go try again!! Unfortunately I have no pics of it. My friend has a dodge ram charger who also got into deep water at the same time. It was over his seats inside. After pulling it out and changing fluids and plugs, etc. it started right up though.

Oh man, was I lucky. Two seconds after my engine locked and died, what do I do...I try and start it! I was lucky I didn't bend or crack anything.

one more story:
My wife brought a new car and told me there was water in the gas tank.....
So I said "Where's the car"
She said "at the bottom of a lake"

Alright! Is a Henny Youngman joke and everyone under 40 something is going to say they don't have a clue who he is! But the right side of the forum's age distribution chart should get it.

LOL

I got the joke IGOT2.....and no...I don;t remember Henny Youngman but I know who he was.... pretty funny guy.... you see alot of old shows and stuff when you are a night shift worker.... so.... I also have parents that are old enough to remember...

Karol

thanks, I don't feel like such a dinosaur (excect for the "my parents" part....haha)

just wait for the first time the little kids in your neighborhood call you "MR." or "MRS."..... thats when it starts.

note to self: We need some car jokes, it may defuse all this poll stuff. Post request for joke sub-forum

OMG

I know what you mean! My niece's new boyfriend called me "mam" on first meeting him....I looked at him like "what the...?" I told him.."Sir, you don't want to call me mam" uugghh sheesh....I also wanted to litterally smack the b**ch at the movie theater when she questioned my college ID... sheesh.... LOL I told her "hun...don't get jealous because I have a real job and can really PAY for college. it's real, right down to the student ID number" I laugh when the "youngsters" act like age is a disease.... then they go on and say how lucky we are to have the things we have... ???? Can we all spell "HARDWORK"

Karol

Hey Karol,
It really gets disgusting when your friends (who are your age) kids start to drive. I don't feel old. Didn't I just graduate college last year??? Oh yeah, that was over a decade ago. Senility at my young age!!

Did you see the thread on a PA explorer club?? Go to http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=27204. We're trying to start a club.

It only gets better:

It was a few months after my daughter's 17th when I got her a car.....so guess whose car she was driving because it was the only automatic? one green explorer owned and driven by you know who.

I always had a picture in my mind:.....
"now, which bashed in quarter panel would upset me the least?" If it happen (and it didn't and I also had no reason to expected it) I already justified to myself that it was a new driver's "a rite of passage."
Getting angry never works. Maybe the whole thing was really a rite of passage for me.

On the other hand, if anyone put a dent in my car when I was in my 20s that person would be best advised to go on the witness protection program.
For those "under 30 something" keep it in mind. Its one of those things that repeats itself. generation after generation, the calendar changes, but the story is exactly the same.

What can you do? keep mumbling:
"its only rock and roll... but I like it""

man those guys on that ranger site sure have potty mouths.....oh well just kinda "shocked" me cause i rarely see it here.

hmmmm

Well u know us young guys are very A-retetive about our vehicles.......... see our buying power is less when we are young dont have all the money to have the best and greatest (except riff he works as a columbian drug lord on weekends I swear he has more money for parts than most) When i see a dinng on my truck it makes me wanna cry... I work hard for my stuff...... and if I catch the SOB that keyed my car................
