I'm really truly seriously thinking about selling my Explorer for whatever I can get for it and buying a cheap economical car... I'm spending a whole lot of money that I usually don't have on gas, and so far I have $0 saved for college, leaving me with 8 months to save the $1500 I want to have for spending money my first year, so I don't have to work... plus books and other stuff that loans don't typically cover.

SO I was looking through the local auto-rag today and went and looked at some cars with my dad (he ended up buying himself an 88 Chrysler New Yorker, ghetto pimp car). At one of the lots we went to, the lady tried to sell the poor guy a Kia, but I couldn't hold it in anymore when she asked for my opinion and I said the car is garbage and I couldn't allow my father to waste $1500 on it  Should've seen the look on her face

ANYWAY... The same lot has an 89 Probe for $1199. It looks good enough, I should've asked to start it. Interior looks good, it's dark grey with dark tinted windows, and I didn't see any body issues... My friend had an 89 that he beat the crap out of till it died and said he'd get another one, and I liked his car too, and he got pretty good gas mileage with the 4 cyl engine...

But anyway, does anyone here know anything about Probes? I'm thinking I'll go by the lot tomorrow and see if I can drive it, and go from there... I want to know of any issues that I should look out for... and stuff...

Thanks

I have a co-worker who used to have an 89 phrobe TURBO. That thing was fast but it didn't have the right suspension to back it up so it was very dangerous to go fast with it. You felt like you were all over the place. He traded it in for a Focus.

hmmm

I had a buddy who had a later one. I think a 93 or so it was a GT and it was a rocket! Very nice, but don't know if i would buy a older one.

But just a tid bit: the probe was brought out to replace the Mustang but the '87 Stang came out and exploded in popularity thus killing the probe later on and the Pony car survived!:D

Its practically a mazda, not thats theres a problem with that though. My friend had the auto 4 cyl and didn't seem to have problems.

good call drummer!

It is a Mazda the probe and the Mx6 were on the same bodys same wheelbase. I forgot about that and I use to sell Mazdas!

Thanks.. Capman, what did you decide?

I used to have a 89 probe LX with the 6 cylinder fast car,but probes are known for head gasket problems.

Well, I went down and drove the Probe, and I liked it... It's not a bad car at all, probably worth well over the $1199 they're asking. But I still need to sell my Explorer for some money...

BUT, I found another car that might be even cooler to have: 88 Subaru RX, 5speed, turbo 4 cyl, full time dual range 4wd, LSD, and it appears to be in pretty nice shape... $1200 OBO, and we're going to meet in Ft. Collins sometime next week so I can drive it... The car is in some small town outside Denver :D I've been wanting a Rally-ish car for quite a while, so I think that'd be a cool car to have... Then if I keep it through college, I can get me another truck and keep the Subaru to run in the Colorado Rally circuit

I bet the bluebook is not that high:(

HEHE my First car was a 92' Probe V6 LX, me and a bunch of my friends got 2gether and fabricated a lift kit for it, it was awesome, that cars really good, id buy another, i had 6 inches of lift with 34's on there, i finally blew the tranny, then i rebuilt it and flipped it in the mud and totaled it... but great car, go for it you wont be sorry

Dude...nissan sentra. Those cars last forever, get great mpg (35) and never need repairs and such. You could get one for cheap too. I used to have one, great car.

i had a 91 probe/ 6c LX

not too much of a bad car...was in the shop a lot for minor things ended up adding up

i know a few ppl with 89 mans and they have far less problems then i ever did

about them being fast, i think the car was a 90 GT turbo, it was a high school project car, i did the 1/4 in 16.0. i don't drag much, but that isn't bad

The 1st car I ever bought for more then a few hundred bucks was a 89 probe gt turbo. That thing moved out pretty well for a 2.2L turbo thats why I'm about to purchase another one same everything except color. I hear you can make these things low 13 second cars with very few mods. According to motor trend this car stock would do the 1/4 in 15.2. I guess i'll find out

You definitely can. The fastest of all generations is a first gen turboed Probe, which ran a 11 sec pass this past Summer. Ofcourse it had a built motor, upgraded turbo, engine management, etc. You don't have to go so far. Just make sure the engine is fine. Upgrade the IC piping, exhaust piping, turbo and you can run 13's all day.

too bad you live so far away. i have a 95 mazda 626 V6 (basically a 4 door 2nd gen. probe GT) that i would sell you for less than that. the paint is faded (typical mazda dark green) and the passenger side has some dents. but the interior is great, and it runs great too. every option except leather and fog lights. with a little money invested it could look like new.

anyway, that subaru would be a really good choice. it's cool to have a CAR with 4 low.

How many miles on that 626. I may be interested?
