i also have the option of buying my friends type R for 80$ and just buying an amp

anyone know what the best amp is for the type R- willing to spend around 150

What size Type R? What voice coil configuration? Ported or sealed? Already have the box?

You're working with a very tight budget for a substage.

It's pretty much impossible to get loud, SQ, and cheap all at the same time. You can sometimes get 2 out of 3.

Good luck!

its a 12 inch type r and has a 4 layer dual voice coil.

I plan on building a ported box, just need a recommendation for an amp.

thanks

In a properly designed and built ported box, that 12 will pound off of as little as 300 watts, and could handle a lot more.

A good quality 300 watt amp will be better for you than a cheapo 1000 watt amp.

In your price range, I would be trying to find a really good deal on something used.

Is the sub 2 ohm? 4 ohm?

With some amps it won't matter. A JL 500/1 would be a great match for that sub and it's going to give you (at least) 500 watts regardless of your ohm load and voltage. You can probably pick up a used one for under $200 if you shop around. Got wires and stuff already?

That's just one suggestion. There are a million different amps out there.

If you are willing to give up some decent cargo area the Type R can come alive in a 1/4 wave resonator powered by as little as 300 watts.
