How difficult is it for someone who has never installed lights to do an installation like this:
EXPLORER.JPG

What has to be done to do the lights by the license plate?

pretty easy, if you cant angle a drill in there to tap the screws in, you can use a good 2 sided tape like 3M brand. ventvisors, etc. are held on by this stuff everyday with car washes and the like beating them up.
make sure to wipe the area w/ alcohol if 3m is used

The instal is fairly straightfoward. I mounted mine there and used existing holes for the attachment.

Good luck.....

I found this picture of the lights....

There are already holes in there? I don't think I quite understand what you mean.

Also, would the 3M double sided tape hold the lights on without having to drill? I don't like the idea of drilling.

Oh last thing, what lights do you guys recommend be installed in the area and how hard is it to wire the lights?

PIAA makes great lights, take a look at their website for the models.

There were holes or bolts in mine, I don't remember, I just remember that I did not drill.

Be sure to wire using a relay.

Good luck.....

Am I wrong to assume that the lights come with wiring instructions? I've never wired anything before and know nothing about putting wires in there places.

BTW aldive, what lights do you have?

They come with wiring instructions

and yes 3M will/should hold. They hold on rainguards real good.

1995XLT I just did that same install, check my post "wiring lights on switched relay." I was very happy with the finished product, they put out good light. Pilot makes a kit specifically for the explorer with custom mounts, and then they sell the same lights seperate. I got the ones without explorer mounts on ebay real cheap and made my own set of custom wooden mounts to lift them up off the bottom of the airdam. THis is pretty tricky to do, if you want it easy just buy their explorer kit. The wiring was a piece of cake. If you have any more questions feel free to email me.

If you do need to get a drill in there, you could always take the airdam off, drill the holes on the bottom of the bumper so that the lights mount to the bottom surface, then install the lights and the airdam. The airdam is held on with about 8 screws and is easy to take off and reinstall. I have 2 pilot lights mounted in my bumper this way. I didn't use the mounting screws that came with the lights in favor of bolts with washers, lockwashers, and nuts. Wiring is usually straightforward with most sets of lights. Good luck!

Hey thanks guys. right now I'm stuck between getting the Hella FF 75 driving lights for $92.99 and the PIAA 001 Series driving lights for $109.95. Should I spend the few extra bucks and get the PIAA's or should the Hella's be fine and I can save a few bucks? I've always heard you get what you pay for and neither set seams to be cheap. Should I follow what has been said and get the most expensive?

Those Pilot lights that you see in the bumper in my pic have lasted me 4 years and cost about $50 ;)

man drilling sucks if its chrome, i had to drill my bumper and a nice cherry red piece of metal came flying off and hit my forhead, nice big burn mark there now!! ouch....

anyways, dont drill if you dont have to...lesson learned, of course screwed in will not fall out, like, ever!

ya and btw, i paid 59.99 CDN and they work awesome! so i wouldnt get either if i was you...

I just installled the pilot kit pl-117 it comes with the custom brackets for the explorer and uses the existing holes in the bumper so there is no drilling very easy to installl and the wiring was simple if you want the easy way out this is the way to go.
