I was wondering if there is anyway to have your fog lights turn on without any of your other lights. I know with aftermarket fog lights you can turn them on and off without regard to the headlights. I am wondering if there is anyway to have factory fog lights operate without the parking or headlights being turned on.

Just wondering.

yup there is a way.. and a simple one too.. just make a separate wiring/circuit for it.. use relays and you can even use the stock fog light switch on you X.. just make sure that the the relay is connected to the ACC so that even if you accidentally forget that your fog lights are on it'll turn off as soon as you turn off your car..

my sport can have the fogs on with the parking light on

My Fog lights work with my parking lights. I am trying to see if I can get them to work without the parking lights, Just the Fog lights on.

Is there a write up on that? Not a very good electrical guy here haha

Thats awesome. Mine come on automatically. But, unfortunately, he has a 2000 not a 2001 or a 2006 so back to the question he is asking and if nothing else here is a bump for him.

my sport is a 01 or r u talking bout someone else wise guy

it can be used for any aux lighting (fog lights, driving lights, etc..) i opted to make a diagram in which the trigger is negative 'cause it is a lot easier for first time users to follow and do.. besides the fact that you can get a ground location almost anywhere you want rather than wiring up a separate fused positive source just for the switch.. unless you want the switch to have an illuminated function when "on", but that's another story..

just make sure that you have a good ground connection to the fog lights..
Hope this helps!

OK, so what do I need to modify from my stock set up in order to make the fog lights work independantly? Really clueless with wiring here

If you're clueless with wiring you might want to enlist the help of someone you know while you do this because the entire project is wiring. It would suck to cut some wires, get halfway through, get lost, and have to potentially drive around with no lights at all.

This is the reason why I am asking what I need to do. I have enough experience to do what is needed if I know for sure what I have to do. This is why I started this thread, I would like to set it up so I could use my fog lights on their own. I do not want to install aftermarket fog lights, It would allow me to use them independantly but would be a waste since I have factory fog lights.

I really appreciate that wiring diagram, I just want to be sure of what I am doing. What changes do I need to make from how the stock fog lights are wired? Would the white box in the middle (relay) be the box under where the stock air box sits?

basically, you're going to make a new wiring harness for the foglights.. that means all youre keeping are the factory fog lights.. you'll need to purchase a 30Amp Relay, an on/off switch of your choice, 18 gauge wires, a 30Amp inline fuse, electrical tape and some spade connectors.. all these can be purchased from Home Depot (wires, connectors, electrical tape) , Radioshack (in-line fuse, relay, switch..) or at a local Auto parts store..

i know you want to use your stock fog lights.. there are 2 wires sticking out of your fog light assembly that has a connector at the end.. cut the wires after the connector so you can remove the foglights just like before.. from the two wires, one is positive and one is negative/ground.. follow the diagram and start with you new wiring from there.. you will get power directly from the battery.. the wiring diagram i provided is just like connecting the dots.. all you have to do is follow what it says and connect one component to another.. all the parts that you will work on have markings or labels on them.. these labels/markings like the numbers on the relay are important and must be properly wired to work.. if you've assembled shelvings or other types of furniture that came with an allen wrench & screws in the box, then you are more than experienced to this one..

the relay is a small coil activated lever switch that is about 1inchX1inch in diameter that you buy in electronic stores or auto parts stores for a couple of bucks.. (click here: http://www.radioshack.com/sm-12vdc-30a-spst-automotive-relay--pi-2062477.html) i prefer bosch brands btw.. you can mount it anywhere you want except in places that it will be submerged in water, exposed to extreme temperatures, etc..

Thank you. That is a big help. I think that I might tackle this once I get my refund check and have some spare time. Once again thanks man.

Almost forgot, I wanted to check and see if there was anyway that I could wire the fog lights to work off the original switch?

The trigger for the 2000 fog lamp relay is from the passenger side low beam. If the voltage source is changed, the fogs can be made to operate in any one of these different ways:
  • all the time time (easiest to wire but also easy to run down the battery),
  • only when the parking, high or low headlights are on (easy to wire and most sensible, IMO)
  • any time the key is on (a little harder to wire and does not allow rear running lights with fogs ).
The factory fog lamp switch would continue to work as originally designed.

My 2000's fog lights work as such...
WITH the parking lights
WITH the low beams
WONT work with hi Beams or Without any lights at all.

yes you can! actually that's what i did.. although it took some very minor modding to the stock switch itself.. i changed the light to a blue LED and a brighter green on-indicator LED while it was out.. i re-used the stock connector so i can remove it easily like before..

here's a couple of old pics i found in my lighting mod folder..

wire for the blue LED light sticking out:

the stock connector i re-used:

the yellow connector is the fog light switch:

now it just functions as a normal on/off switch that allows me to turn on my fog lights at ANY time i want as long as the ignition key is turned to ACC.. so that means it WONT eat up my battery because it wont be accidentally left on when i turn off the car..

you're making a NEW harness for the fogs and leaving the stock wiring untouched.. so you wont change anything from the stock configuration & just making it seem "un-used" since you made a new one and just using whatever hardware (i.e. stock connectors, switches, etc..) there is available to make it look OEM.. its the simplest most effective way IMO based on the many times i've wired high wattage aux lighting to all my cars and it never failed me yet..

Good luck as soon as you tackle the project!
