Lookin' to buy a work rig. I'm kinda scared of the 91-92's. Is this wrong? The 93-94's seem to be a little less problematic (sp?). But, I've seen the 91-92's with 300K plus miles on them. I want a four door five speed 4x4. Any advice?

The '93/'94 have like 6 more HP. That might be the only difference?

Both of mine have been '92s.

If you're going to keep it "stock" then I don't see a problem with any of the 1st gens.

You know the old rule; the last model year will have the fewest problems.

I vote 94

(no suprise there!)

They are pretty much the same..

91-92 have rear ABS.. I think 93 is when 4 wheel abs started

91-92 have no EGR and usually only 1 o2 sensor when 93-94 have egr and 2 o2 sensors

91-92 have no cam sensor AND have Multiport fuel injection instead of sequencial.. I think 93's have SFI but it might not be until 94 (slightly better mileage with SFI than MFI)

91-92 don't have side skirts (tupperware).. you can find 93-94's with tupperware

93-94 have a newer head design (different casting, but interchangeable).. supposivly the 93-94 is a better casting, but I haven't seen real proof yet.

as Froder mentioned, get the one that looks better maintained/less miles etc regardless of year of vehicle.

I have a '92 and a '94. the tranny's are crapped out in both (A4LD autos).

never bought one with a 5 speed, but have replaced and worked on 5 spds in ex's and rangers. the gears I've seen broken don't give me any level of confidence over the automatics.

the iron is getting older in any of the 1st gen ex's. beware of the only driven to church and back on Sunday deals and be aware that there might be a number 1 or 2 missing from the actual mileage because the odometers don't register over 99,999 miles.

my '92 has 291,000 miles and a bad tranny, what more can I say ?

The '94.........cause it's the last..........they fixed the problems by then.

Actually....cause the auto trans is the best of the lot ('91-'94)......and R-134a AC.

Aloha, Mark

I have had a 93' since new and I want to keep it another 14 yrs. Love the damn thing. It has been extremely reliable. for me.
