I recently checked out a few 2001 Explorer sports etc. that left me with a few concerns...

Has there been a 'lowering' of quality of the years?

It seemed that 2001s had a serious amount of plastic parts & was already rusting in the same spots as my 93 x sport...

AND - the plastic "arm" on the gas gap (that fell out in my hand at the dealership) was not encouraging. Even 98s have a metal gas gap "arm"...

What's the scoop? I'm afraid to go for a newer ex???

Thanks,
PJ

All newer (post 2000) vehicles use a greater amount of plastic than thoes prior. In some cases it affects the durability of the components, but for the most part its just the auto anufactrers way of cutting prodction costs in order to keep vehicle prices down (and their proffit up). As for the rusted dog leg, IMHO it is most likely a sign as to where the vehicle spent the past few winters more than a sign of poor quality. If the dog leg is rusty take a look underneath the vehicle and make sure the drivetrain isn't rusty as well.

Regarding rust --...Well, my friend's 98 infinit qx4 doesnt' have a spot of rust on it & its winter driven...

Actually lemon aid gives ford ex a 'not recommended' rating!!

2nd gen and up Explorers have much better dog legs than 1st gens. Are you talking about the step bars? (those do rust from lack or clearcoat)
