Hi all,

I've got a '97 Explorer V8 AWD auto trans. My front ds went and I've been searching for another. There are two different ds for the V8; 4 bolt front output flange, or 6 bolt bearing cup front output flange. How do I tell which ds I have?

By 4 or 6 bolt front output bolt pattern, I am guessing you are talking about the transfer case connection. Our 1998 has a 6 bolt(?) CV style connection at the transfer case a standard u-joint connection at the front diff.

I have rebuilt the CV joint with a Dorman kit, sorry I don't know the part number. If you have a NAPA near you they have the parts. Or, Any reputable driveshaft shop can make the repairs.

You could count the number of bolts holding the drive shaft to the transfer case. There are no other bolts in the area, so, either 4 or 6.

You should have the 6 bolt.

rebuild the old one; even if you lack the skill or ability to do it yourself, any driveshaft shop will do it cheaper than buying another, plus you know you have the correct one ;)
