Can anyone help me here? I ordered gears for the front and rear but got something that won't fit in the front end of a 2000 Explorer. Box says D35 but it looks like I got reverse cut gears for front end of 1st gen. "X".

Picture attached...

I'd like to find out where you guys got your gears and what where the part numbers... for the gears and for install kit. I can't seem to find anything...

Where are you at, can you just swap the whole housing? I still plan to buy a low mileage 3.73 front and swap out my old 4.10 front diff.

Yeah the D35 has two cuts, a reverse for the high pinion 1st gens and a regular for the low pinion 2nd gens.

As for the gears, when I regeared my stock axles, I bought the gearsets from Randy's Ring and Pinoin. A few years later, when I regeared the D44, I bought the gearset from CompleteOffRoad.com. I went with the same vendor when I purchased the gearset for the D60 earlier this year.

We do have a vendor (ericautopart) who I think sells gearsets.

Now that would be perfect... I used a company in Chicago - National Drivetrain... and the guy there doesn't know which gearset I need.

It's hard when you buy stuff and have it shipped and then a month later you find out that the whole thing is wrong.

Looks like he gave me gears for another D35 - not even an Explorer.
I'll try Eric then, see if I can find him.

Just to make sure there is no misunderstanding, the Explorer is Dana 35

Okay I'm confused, I'm not sure if I"m correct about post #2 about the high and low pinion between the 1st and 2nd gens.

EDIT -- a little bit of research and I think I'm right.. hopefully! :)

I know but looking at the picture everyone can see that the ring gear I got from them is smaller... might not be D35 although the box says D35-456F.

I've easily installed well over a hundred gear sets in my life. One thing I found out: Go with name brand high quality gear sets when possible. It will make set up so much easier. Factory is the best for the easiest set up. And if you are not setting up a diff for the drag strip, STAY AWAY from "racing" ring and pinions. These are softer to absorb the shock of a launch and will wear away quickly in street use.

Well, all I need to know is the correct part number. I tried many places abd they all have front DANA 35 from 1990-2001 listed as the same gear set. Ridiculus! We all know it all changed in 1995.

Part number? anyone?

I am in the process of changing out my 01' original 3.73 gears with 4.56 gears (yukons). I have gone through a lot of trial and error. I have also been trying to get a tru-trac limited slip to fit up front. It can be done but lots of machining. I basically first got a reverse cut gear for the front which was definately not the right ones, so standard rotation for my X.

I then came to find out that the front diff is a one off dana 35. It is basically a dana 30 carrier with a dana 35 ring gear setup. So when trying to fit the tru-trac in the front the carrier was way to long. I found that there is a way to machine it down to match a dana 30 carrier length. Just time & money!! I just desided to install the dana 35 tru-trac in my buddies 2004 WJ and go with and Aussie. If the aussie up front tends to break CV's I will replace with the torsen which is due out in January of 09'. For a place to find gears, I would also recommend randy's ring and pinion.

CMAX

The Dana 35 standard cut was also used on late 80s Cherokee (or 87+ Wranglers) -- so try asking for that. When you order, just make sure it is a Dana 35 standard cut (aka - low pinion). The front IFS differential on the 2nd gen Explorer is not any different than any other Dana 35s, so it is universal.

No, CMAX is correct, the 95-01 Explorer has a very unique front carrier in it. The gears may be like any other D35, but the carrier is nothing like any normal D35 carrier.

This thread is about the gears, so I'll stay out of that subject, I would only use Ford gears. Regards,

Oh didn't know -- my apologies Dre!

I didn't get any answers but was able to get in touch with Eric - someone sugested in the beginning of the threat. He might be able to help me.

Getting a list of parts - with numbers - for people upgrading their rigs would be helpfull... also places to purchase. This way nobody would have to go through this confusing process. Explorer aftermarket market is small - let's keep it organized.

no, looking for 4.56... thanks anyway.

just look at the picture in the first post... look at ring gear - can you tell me which is what? standard or reverse rotation?

The one on the left (with the yellow marking compound) is low pinion standard cut. The one on the right is the high pinion reverse cut.

Easiest way to tell is if you look at the ring gear head on as a donut with the teeth facing you, if the tooth at 3 o'clock swoop down, its for a low pinion. If the tooth at 3 o'clock swoop upwards, its a high pinion.
