'00 XLT 5.0 V8
Hi, I'm new here and I'm glad to be here. Here's my question, I'm going to buy a flowmaster for my Ford Explorer 2000 XLT model with the 5.0 V8. It used to be my mom's truck before she passed. Anyways the only things done to it are Subwoofers in the back, royale Purple oil, and recently bought a K&N air filter. I saw the Flowmaster force on the summit racing website. I foyund the kit for my model and year. But is there anything else I can do to improve some acceleration and horsepower while not turning it into a street truck? Thanks for all your help I'll have to get a picture of the baby to show you. It's gold in color.

I have that muffler and it sounds good, but I had mine custom installed at a local shop (about the same price) and he took my 2 rear cats off while he was doing it. As far as other mods, check out torque monster headers everyone seems to be very happy they bought them, I'm just waiting on mine to get shipped out.

thanks I looked at the torque monster headers but i can't afford that this year.:( thanks for the warm welcome too. How much boost in performance do you think a flowmaster can give the 5.?

I'm wondering does K&N offer a intake system for the 2000 5.0 model because I'm haveing a hard time finding one. I like the standard Filter by them which I bought recently, noticably different.:D I'm probably going to order the flowmaster this weekend, and have it installed for my B-Day which is on the 27th:D

While your flowmaster muffler is being installed you should consider having the rear secondary cat converters removed, then run a dual in single out style flowmaster (dual 2.25 in single 3" out) this is a great setup for a 5.0L truck

Hey guys I plan on ordering the flowmaster from the above site posted. I just wanted some of your input before I shell out the dough. Will the really be worth the money and is there any other affordable things I couild do to go with it? Also will I lose or gain HP with the setup kit I'm about to order?Maybe next year I can afford Torque Monster headers but definitely not now especially with school plus I have to get new A/T tires this winter.

That's the same muffler I have, it sounds pretty good. But I wouldn't buy that kit. Go to a muffler shop (local guy not a big chain) and have him get you the 50 series suv muffler, dual 2.25" in and 2.5" out. That way he can make custom pipes for it, and remove the 2nd set of cats. Doing that will cost you about the same as the kit, and really it's cheaper when you consider the time it would take you to put the kit on.

edit: if you come to the meet up on saturday the 21st you can hear mine in person, though it will be a little different since I'll have my headers on by then. go to kcareaexplorers.com for details.

Are you familar with Seaburg muffler's in NKC? It's off of Burlington and Armor and they do that kind of work. That's where I plan on going

I'm not to familiar with KC, sorry you might ask the guys on kcareaexplorers, they could probably tell you.

Here is my exhaust video, it's deeper than it sounds on the video, but it will give you a good idea of the rumble.

thanks for the advice I got a couple more questions. My dad is going to help me by printing the kit from summitracing on paper and take it to the muffler shop with us. But Why is that kit not a great idea over the SUV 50 series? Also how much performance do you gain from this ? Thanks alot for the help;)

The muffler in the kit is a 50 series suv, your just paying more for the kit, and being able to just bolt it on. And by having it done "custom" the muffler shop can remove the 2 rear cats. As far as performance, I never got to run it stock, but looking at other peoples stock numbers, I gained about 4 tenths of a second in the quarter mile, with my exhaust and Mac cold air intake. You hardly notice the difference on the low end, but you can really feel it higher up in the rpm's. Just the sound was enough to justify the cost for me.

Nice I'm excited for me to finally put the first aftermarket mod on the explorer. So pretty much you don't notice the power cruising along the street but when you get on the freeway, you can unleash the beast in a sense? Also is there a site for you intake system? I'm interested in that too although I feel like it would be a wast since I just purchased a K&N filter just 2 weeks ago.

Is the flowmaster 50 series just good for street performance? And has anyone installed it w/o the rear cats being removed, since my dad is a gearhead and assures me that having the CC removed is not exactly street legal, i want the rumble from the muffler, just not overly loud. Also the reason I ask is my car will be mostly for on-road, but if the occasion arises, I want to be able to leave the road in my Explorer ;)

Ok So if I bought this would my current K&N filter in the stock box fit in a '99 Mountaineer which is also a 5.0. I know someone who has one and might like to buy the current one. Seriously, thanks again for all the support. I appreciate it while I'm slowly but surely giving new life into the Explorer.

You don't have to remove the rear cats, it won't sound quite the same but will probably be close, the muffler isn't that loud when your being easy on it, with the windows up, and radio on you won't hear it unless you get on it.

Yes the K&N will fit in a 99 mounty, I'm happy to help, I've had so much help from this site over the years it's nice to be able to help someone else.
