ok fellas, my next upgrade is the paint, might not get it done till next spring, but i'm gonna start planning, I'm not paying 2-3 thousand at some shop, i got a couple guys with spray guns, and i'll do as much prep myself... I would like to spend less than $1000, I found paint online around $50 a gallon, any one know how many gallons i may need, and any other stuff i will need to buy? I know nothing about car paint so please help me out!!!! It's white now, gonna go with orange or black.

there are TONS of issues doing it your self.

Enviroment
health
legality
to name a few.

If you want a quality job, then let a professional do it.

I just painted my X with the duplicolor black. It cost me about $300 total for the primer, black paint, and the clear coat. Each quart was about $20. It turned out pretty good exept for the orange peel.My advice is, if your going to pay these people to paint it, make sure they wet sand each coat, the primer, the color of your choice, and the clear otherwise you will get the orange peel. I think duplicolor is legal in every state and it is ready to spray right out of the can (no mixing thinner).

I went to Maaco. I will post some pics up when I get it back next week. It was over a $1000 though. I agree with the people that say do not do it yourself. I know that you can do the prep work yourself and take it to a place like Maaco and it will only cost you $300-$500 if you are just getting a single color and the prep is done

KLUTCH!Can you email me pics of your X, I,d love to see how it turned out. I did my rims with duplicolor glossy black, and they look good. please! ogwhiterob216@aol.com

I know people with garage, equipment ect. i just need to find out what i need to buy... paint type primer ect.... how much it may cost?> estimate??? what all am i gonna have to plan on getting is what im asking, i know prepping is a *****... thats another topic, it's like cleaning a oil spill... but im all about nice things, so i wanna get it done one day, I think a nice orange with the black rims on big tires looks slick.

sure, I can email you some pics. I might not be able to sent them to you until the weekend because Im taking the pics with my phone and I dont get good service at my house.

^^^^^^^

i want to use that stuff on my rockers!

tired of gravel chips.

It depends if you want the paint job to look great, to look ok, or just to look. It also depends how long you want it to last - long enough for you to sell it and change your phone number, or really for the life of the vehicle.
Doign some of the prep yourself will help but you mnigth want to make sure you are doing that right in the first place! When I was getting my truck painted, I tried to save some money by having a co-worker do some of the prep, he did a pretty bad job of it and the body shop had to redo it plus some anyways.

If you want like a show-quality paint job that will last years and years, and are changing colors, expect to spend several thousand dollars... if youw ant to repaint over your existing color with the same color and just want it to last a few years you can have maaco do it and save quite a bit of money.

Just FYI, when I had my truck repainted, it ended up costing about $7000. Part of that was fixing hail damage, a few accident dents and dings, and a full color change with flames, and that was after he gave me a decent discount. The paint itself is cheap, the prep work is what'll get you. My truck was in the shop for nearly 2 months (not being worked on full time though), and only took a day to spray, do the flames, and clearcoat).

, make sure they wet sand each coat, the primer, .

Oh this should be fun.

Why sand each coat?

Why wet sanding as opposed to dry sanding?

wet sanding each coat will help to get a smoother paint job and you will have less of a chance of getting the orange peel texture. I only wet sanded the clear coat, so I still have the orange peel look under the clear, but it is smooth to the touch. If I wet sanded the primer, black, and clear coat then my paint job could have been like glass and the paint would have been more reflective.

If you wet sand your going to want to use like 1500 grit sand paper or higher

I know that Maaco has a bad name but my buddy has a new mustang that he sent to the same shop that I sent mine to and it turned out great. It all depends on the shop that you take it to and how much you stress to them that you want a good paint job and that they will redo it until they get it right. I went by the shop today just to take a look at the prep work that they did before they started spraying. They do a good job if you take the time to stay on top of them and they do not think that they need to rush to make it a in and out job. They have had mine for a week now and they start spraying tomorrow. The prep job that I got is just as good as any other shop. I might have a little orange peel because I am sure they will not wet sand the paint and only the clear but I am getting a good paint job for a good price. I know that not all of the shops are the same but the one that is in my area has been around for many years and the owner is there everyday to ensure that they keep a good name.

I'll tell ya, I have rock chips on my sides, all the way up the doors. It always tempts me to Herc the sides and be done with it.

I think black on the roof would be too hot for my climate or maybe my tastes. You're in Florida so you probably know what I'm talking about though.

whats up with this paint job??????.....($70 bedliner)

and im not paying anyone, my dude got the spray gun and a garage, how much paint do i need, what type,?????
i can worry about the grueling prep when the time comes!

tie that in with enviroment
paint contains some seriously hazardous chemicals to both health and and enviroment.

In know in Maryland ( Anne Arundel county? ) there is some pretty stiff regulations with using that stuff and where.

that process would be extreemly time consuming. Waiting the the wet to dry throughly. I am sure you know what even the slightest hint of moisture can do to paint.

Orange peel would indacate some sort of contaminate some where in the process, or inattiquate times, or in attiquate conditions.
Sanding the color makes no sence. You put on the color just to take some of it back off again. That could lead to uneven patches in the color.

Wet sanding is way over rated. We have not wet sanded a car in ten years. Dry sanding has worked more than fine for us.
