Alright. I have a 91' Sport with a 5 speed. I was gonna sell it, I got an offer for a grand. However I found out today that there is a local mud bog. I am considering not selling and building it for the mud bog. It runs great and strong. However the clutch is about gone, and other then some clunking and clanking coming from it at slow speeds, I think it'll fix up good enough to last me a season. I want to start of in the 1/8 flat track races until I can afford some more stuff for it. Now I need to make it fast, I want to win. What can you guys tell me about the explorer that'll help me out, what suggestions do you guys have, any tips and tricks? I figured a PVC intake and open exhaust would be a start. I plan on welding the spiders in the front. should I chop the hell out of it and try to cut weight?

Here's what I have to work with:

Strip the interior and glass out to shave some weight, add the largest most agressive tires you can fit (sawzall is your friend), put a good clutch in it and you should be good to go!

you have a looooooooooong way to go before you win anything.

Lift it to high heaven. Solid axle swap it, V8, 44" swampers. Then you may have a chance to win a mud bug race.

go nuts.

The small classes are not that bad.

Get the biggest most agressive tire on there....maybe pull the fenders for extra clearance, and a snorkel perhaps. Maybe a small lift..the cheapest for your truck would be shackles F-150 coil seats...and maybe a 2" body lift that with some agressive 33's, and a snorkel should do ok. The bl runs about 100 bucks, the shackles you can get for 15 bucks at auto zone(1.5" lift), and the Coil seats from a junk yard for maybe 50 bucks?

low gears + big tires= winner

With limited horsepower, I would run a 33x10.5 mud tire. Open the ehaust and the intake. You can keep the stock air box, just toss the breather tube. A mud flap on the middle of the front end, to protect the fan, is cheap. Air down tires, 15-psi. Breather lines should be extended.
Strip it for weight, doors, rear hatch and spare tire have to go.

It would be easier & cheaper just to restore since it a 1st year 1st gen. It's not in That bad a shape......By the time you start spending on "mud boggin", u r talking big money to win anything......I hate to think of someone cutting up a 1st year 1st gen. :(

What bog are you planning on going to? ATS?

Cheapest: Throw some 31-33" tires on it, lincoln lock the front and rear, get use to putting the pedal to the floor.

Personally, i'd build a good trail rig (not as expensive as some on here make out). But i'm not a fan of mud :D

Gears aren't that expensive if you do them yourself...but if you have to ask you usually can't do it yourself haha

Mud bogging is a cheap build. Tires are the big expense. Then it is run it and repair it til it can't be fixed.

If you are going to bog it start collection starter and alturnators, cause they wont last.
