Hey guys, Ive been browsing on here and finally decided to make a post. I am new to explorers and you guys seem to be very insiteful. I have an 06' explorer XLT with a V8 and a towing package.

My question is this. How will it do pulling a 6x12 or 6x14 enclosed trailer. Is there any difference in single or double axle issues with towing? How many miles per gallon are you getting? Highway? Anybody towing through dry grain fields?

Thanks in advance!! I am fairly new to explorers and again you guys seem very knowledgable. Appreciate any imput.

Gary

MG,

Thanks for the reply. So are you saying I shouldnt have any problems? From what I understand it shouldnt be a problem at all, just mainly concerned about MPG issues. I believe the weight would be anywhere from 2,000-4,000max pounds everything included? Pulling short distances threw harvested grain fields, for hunting purposes.

I can't imagine you'd have any problems. Just make sure your Explorer you buy has the factory towing package with a 2" receiver.

As far as MPG, a lower profile enclosed trailer will get you the best mileage, frontage area creates wind resistance and decreases mileage. They make taller and shorter trailers, I'd try to find a shorter one if it fits your needs.

As long as the fields are dry and solid, you shouldn't have any issues with crossing one.

Hey Gary I have the almost identical truck (except heavier because its a Ltd) and I routinely towed a 8,000 trailer last summer. I know the weight police might reign in on me but to my defense I estimated (try not to guesstimate)the weight to be 6600 2 years ago and when my 98 Exp 5.0 AWD pulled it fine I had no other reason to believe it was heavier. I weighed it last summer midseason to my suprise. I even towed it with 5 people in the truck (3 adults 2 kids) with the a/c on but I towed strictly with the OD off. I would get from 8 to 9 mpg but I know it would be better if the trailer was light enough to drive with OD on. When I drove interstate with the OD on and on level ground I think I remember seeing 10 mpg (at 70 mph) to 14 mpg (at 60). To see the limits of it I pulled a 31' travel trailer that people said should only be done with a heavy duty 3/4 ton and it pulled it 40 miles home but the rear did sag though from the 1000+ tongue weight. So I think you will do fine. As far as the fields I don't know. I pulled that 8K trailer up and down boat ramps though and so far no tranny issues after 20K.
