Got a little break from life on the road as a field service tech so I decided to do some work on my GT-40 Upper Intake.

Stripped off almost all of the old finish in prep for P\C.

Cleaned interior of all old built up gum and varnish with a syphon gun and washing with a high end solvent.

Perhaps crank up the air compressor and polish out all of the interior casing flash to smooth things out a bit.

From what I can see with a bore scope it looks like of the vacuum line connections are flared on the inside so those guys are not coming out.

Bummer, wanted to pull those out so they could be finished in a different color.

Now the questions:

Red Arrows are PCV connections, both of these were hooked together with a T fitting and ran to the PCV valve. Looks like no one has this hose assembly anymore so I'll have to invent "Plan B" for replacement of the old "Hard as a Rock and Brittle Hoses".

{I'm trying to think of a reason why the factory had 2 points tied together if the entire interior assembly is under the same absolute vacuum?}

Perhaps a balance line of some type?

I'm open to input as to why it should stay.

Green arrows in the picture attach to the heater tube assembly. This seems to be some type of coolant heated element. This just seems like another coolant leakage problem waiting to attack me in the future.

Is there a reason it should stay?

Has anyone deleted this system without any adverse effects?

Black Arrow was a capped fitting and will be left as is.

I could be wrong buy I believe 2 of the green arrows are for the egr system

You don't have to run coolant through it. The coolant in/out is the green arrows. Some 96 and 97s don't have it. I just looped the hose back to the rail on my ranger, I figure it raises IAT so I bypassed it. It's purpose is to help with junk buildup from the EGR (which I deleted also)

Thanks.

Heck it gets so hot under there why would you want to heat it up more to keep the sludge build up down.

Just another PITA coolant leak waiting to happen IMO.

BoomiXplorer, So you totally deleted the EGR or you just went to using (1) vacuum port instead of (2) like mine was set up?

I totally deleted it. I plugged the exhaust manifold and put a plate on the intake elbow. I have an SCT tuner so I don't have a check engine light. I can't remember how I deleted the vacuum going to it but I deleted all of it. I am pretty sure I took the tube out going to the egr soloniod and put a stainless screw in its place.

Lots of talk about EGR and it's benefits on this forum but I for one am not a fan of it. I took the intake off my ranger after 15k miles and it is very clean on the inside with just some clean oil residue that got past the PCV. There was no gunk or burnt looking oil in the intake. I also run cobra valve covers and have my oil fill where the EGR valve would be. My intake and 5.0 plate is also powdercoated.

Thanks.

Just to confirm what was said above, my 96 doesn't have the 2 green lines there from the factory.
