It was a lot fun. I'm not sure how it will be with no snow cause that really made it tricky in some spots. But with some rain coming in this past week and stuff maybe it will help us out some and make it a little funner! I've noticed up here the leaves have already started changing. The weather has been so screwed up that things are starting earlier like the foliage change. I hope we still have some color in November!

Happy trails!!

I think that and logging roads are what most everything between the obstacles is. If you'd like a good idea of if it's worth your time to make the drive, challenge wise, PM Bionc Marsh. about it. His Explorer is closer to your truck size-wise so he can give you better input than the rest of us.

When are we going to set a definite time and meeting point?

We'll figure that out as we get closer to the trip, but I think it will be sometime Saturday morning somewhere in Rawley Springs.

I am heading out to GWNF in about an hour to go camping. Not doing any off-roading since my Ex needs some repairs, but I am going to search out a gas station (i.e. McDorman's) where we all can meet. I'll get back with ya'll tomorrow night sometime.

I dunno about y'all down in that neck of the woods, but up here in northern MD the foliage is pretty much gone by the first week in November....and it's usally pretty damn cold by then too. Throw in a drought-ridden year and those water starved leaves are gone by mid October...just my $.02

You are right spas. Normally we still have a little bit of color about that time of year, but with the lack of rain this summer, seems like everything has advanced on it 's timing. Oh well, it will still be nice to do some wheeling!!

Happy trails!!

All the leaves are still green here. Maybe they won't all fall off by November.

>keeping fingers crossed< I sure hope so-I've never gotten to see what the foliage looks like down there in the fall :)

On Campus its pretty green, but out rt. 33 west in GWNF the leaves are starting to change. Its like a tunnel of orange and green with tons of leaves covering the road. I hope some are still left by November! Anyways, camping out there was a washout last night, literally. We got camp set up way out in the woods and our fire going and then the sky opened up on us. We called it quits after 2 straight hours of rain. Good thing is that I found the perfect place to camp out there. Its kind of out of the way, but it is an amazing spot to camp. I might stay there in November.

Sorry for the late chime in... new member and all. If I can figure out why my 4x4 doesnt work prior to then I am in. Also I would like to hear from anyone in the Hampton Roads area... just starting my build up.

Mike,
I live in VA Beach just past the court house on Northlanding. Have you figured out whats wrong with your truck yet? With out knowing any history, could it be that the motor that engages the trasfercase is bad? just a thought. ------------ Josh

Oh yeah, shoot, I have been back for a week now. Made it back just fine! Camping got rained out, but I did find a SWEET place to camp. Also, I think I found out which gas is McDorman's. Actually, it is the only gas station in Rawley Springs. It will be a great spot to meet. There is a small parking lot near the gas station that (hopefully) will fit all of our trucks.

AND how many trucks will we have?

Can any of u guys make it to PARAGON in October? A bunch of us that have been chatting on the SNOWRUN under Club Runs are going should be a lot of fun.

Topo Map of GWNF West of Rawley Springs, VA Here ya go guys. I hope this link works, I couldn't get the pic of the map to pop up in the window, but the link should work. Thats 33 West cutting through the mountains, many trails on either side. Named ones such as Second Mountain, Dictum, and Kephart on the right up the ridges, and mud flats and lakes on the left side. Check it out...

Went out that way today to check on the leaves, some trees are starting to change. I figure they will be peak in 2 weeks and past peak in 4 weeks. Temperature was at least 20 degrees colder on top of Reddish Knob than it was in the valley. I froze up there in shorts today.

I've been meaning to bump this thread. I went back through the other day and started to list the names that were going so far, but it's still hard to tell. I was just trying to get a rough idea on how many were planning on coming out. Who is heading this up, is it you VBVA?

Happy trails!!

I don't really want the responsibility, but I would I guess. Its not like we have to organize competitive kickball and who cooks what at what time. Seems to me that we should just meet at a certain time in Rawley Springs and hit the trails. Pack your own food and eat it whenever the group agrees to take a break. Do that all day Saturday and Sunday morning if people are up for it and go from there. As far as trails, I know of some right off 33 and some others in the surrounding areas. I am sure that other people will know of their favorite spot as well. Leave it up to the group to make a decision on all matters is what I say...

Yeah i didn't mean it like we had to follow the leader, it just seems like it easier to have a plan before we go. We did it last time just like you said, but SteveVB was the one we followed cause he knew where he was going.

Happy trails!!

Ok peoples, I don't really want to overall responsibility of organizing this trip, but since we are fast approaching this trip (close to one month now) I would like to get a definite head count. If you are going to be wheeling with us in GWNF on November 9-10, please make a note of it on this thread. Thanks...

P.S. As we get closer (another week or two) I could put up directions to Brandywine campground and McDorman's gas station.
