So, I need the room in my back cabin on my 1998 Explorer...so the 12inch JL Sub has got to go. I looked at different boxes so I could keep the sub, but I want to keep the back as clean as I can, so no sub boxes for me.
Of course, the factory subwoofer is dry rotted and dead, so I was looking at 8 inch after market woofers. I found a few I like, but I was told it's pretty easy to fit a 10 inch in the factory location with a little work.
So my question is, how many of you guys were able to mount a 10inch woofer in the factory 8inch opening? Was it hard? What exactly did you do to get it to fit??

Thanks for any help you can give.

Why a ten? Not trying to discourage, but you could find an 8" that packs a damn good punch and save some trouble.

Other then that, I don't think it'd be to difficult, you'd just have to watch your mounting depth and make sure the depth for the new sub would fit.

Oh, believe me, I an really leaning more towards an 8in if fitting a 10in in the hole is to hard. When I told people I was getting a new 8in, they kept telling me a 10 would hit harder.

Hunt on here for the best bolt in aftermarket sub box, the Stealthbox. The one just here for sale was priced very well. They come with a 10" woofer, run about $450 new, and used prices are sometimes under $150. This one I mentioned is less, Here it is;

Thanks for the link, Im gonna look in on it.

Here is a pic of me carving out a 91-94 OEM enclosure to fit an 8" sub...

I did not have the correct tools at the time, so I used a corded drill, small drill bits, vice grips, and cutters.

I first outlined around the existing opening for an 8" sub. Drilled numerous holes with the small drill bits as close to each other as possible, on the outline. Moved drill side to side also. Then took vice grips, grabbed a piece, bent up and down, to break pieces off. After breaking pieces off all around, I cleaned up the opening a bit with a file and the rotary rasp bits pictured below, from Harbor Freight.

Keep in mind that the OEM enclosure does not have much air space. That alone counted out many sub options, even in the 8" size...

Yeah, Im not looking for mind shattering bass, just enough bass to keep the music even.

The stealthbox is really nice, even with the stock sub amp. I imagine it's even better with an aftermarket one. I don't know if it's $499 worth of nice, but it's definately $150 worth of nice. The only problem is if you're still using the stock audio system, you'll have to relocate the RCU in order to fit the stealthbox in. With my aftermarket Kenwood DNX-7100, I was able to remove the RCU, mounted the factory sub amp where the RCU had been, and fit the stealthbox in with no problems.

Do remember that the 98-01's have different HU amps along with the HU, the older systems were harder to deal with. The 98 Mach you have needs the stock amp to work best with the HU. There are two signals in the sub wire, one for the mute function, and it's interpreted by the stock amp etc. I don't know how others have wired up aftermarket amps.

Would anyone happen to know the mounting depth of the stock 8in enclosure??
