Harrisonburg, VA- January

pre-run...sort of

Well, I went down to Harrisonburg yesterday. Ran a trail up to reddish knob, and flagpole knob, then we hit Kephart run.
The reddish knob run is nice and senic ends up at the a resevoir, couple of places that make it interesting, a couple of more places will get extremely interesting if there is any more ice on the trail. If I can find directions it may make an OK second day run if your going, although if it gets too much ice and snow it wont be passible without chains. There were a couple of spots that the wet ice slides you to the edge of the mtn. and if the ice patches get much bigger you wont be able to make it across before you run out of trail.

I hope it either snows or warms up and rains though because everything was frozen soilid and it is very dry. Kephart is usually fairly wet and muddy, but what water there was, was frozen, but most of the puddles and streams have no visible water in them at all. Good work out for the shocks though :bounce: :)

Next week Ill figure a trail route for the 19th. Update attendance so I can see the numbers

Just addded: Paul added our trip yesterday to his trail reports if your interested its

I forgot

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!

bump

Just a little over a couple of weeks away now. Let's keep everyone informed of our plans.

I plan to be up there sometime Friday night. Me and RUMAN and sc4wda XLT should all be together. Anyone else going up Friday night that will run through Roanoke, VA on I-81?

Please everybody update your possibility of going if it's not already correct on the list. Thanks.

Rick,

As of right now I'm searching for a job. If I'm able to get one before the 19th there's a good change I'll end up working on the weekends, thus killing my chance to make it. If I don't get a job before then I'll have the weekends off and I'll be there.

I really don't wana say that I'm in and then have to drop out untill the time comes closer. I'm in as of right now, unless I find a job. Make since? :D

I'm still on the bubble. If I come, it'll be for only Saturday. I'd give it a 75% chance of being there at this point.

Lee, jobs suck. Don't you want a longer vacation anyways? :)

If you do find one, just state that you just moved there and you need the 18,19,20 off for something already plannned and very important out of state. I'm sure whoever could understand.

oh heck yea...tell em anything to get you up there. i told my work i have a speeding ticket in harrisonburg and have court fri. little white lie wont hurt. and theres absolutely no way i can work fri, sat, and sun. wheelin comes first

On another note, if any of you ECX members would like to get your decals that day and save on shipping, please let me know ASAP.

We (wife Sandi and I) will be leaving Newport News VA, via I64 around 3-4 on Friday. That puts us in Harrisonburg around 7:30. Staying at the Courtyard by Marriott just off I81 Harrisonburg exit.

I'll be leaving Hurricane, WV about 5, putting up there about....i have no idea, i think it's about a 4 hour drive, so we'll. My buddy is along for the ride (if not him my fiance) and we are going to be staying in the holiday inn express, that way i can get up and feel smarter!! haha.

John, i'll pick mine up there, just let me know how i'll owe you, see ya there!!

Happy trailes!!

Howdy Gang

I'm settling in here at Anderson, SC and haven't gotten used to looking at eastern threads yet but now that I am here I looked at this one and notice you're planning a run in a couple of weeks.

I had to cancel going to T-Haven since I am unemployed and couldn't justify another 4,000+ mile trip after having just taken the "Herc Tour" a couple of months ago, plus I am still going to Moab. So I am free that weekend, GWNF looks to be 350 miles away, which is doable.

I am interested in joining you guys, but like Lee, I cannot justify a one day trip. Plus it's MLK three day weekend, right? I'd come for Saturday and all day Sunday too if anyone is interested since we wouldn't really have to leave until Monday since it is a holiday.

I'll run any trails you are planning, but am also interested in tackling something a little tougher if anyone else is interested and has the vehicle to do it in. If not, I'll still enjoy doing easy stuff and meeting everyone.

PS: is anyone thinking of Tellico? I'd like to get a big run this spring, maybe in March during spring break or something. If something else is already planned, never mind. But I do plan on Tellico in March if anyone is interested.

I've got about the same drive as you. I'm hoping to run on sunday too. I'd like to tackle some harder stuff myself. I don't as nice of setup as you, but i can drive my truck. I won't be off work on monday but i still want to stay for sunday but for how long i don't know. Another possiblity is snow. They probably got hit hard today. I know this snow will more then likely be gone, but there are some storms headed through. We'll see.!!

Happy trailes!!

I guess I forgot to mention, we will be staying for a Sunday ride. Unfortunately I do not have MLK dau off, so we will be driving back Sunday evening. We would like to do a few of the tougher runs.

Tellico and two days

Gerald,
I think a Tellico Explorer Run would be great- if you set the date Ill try and make it, its a haul but should be worth it from what Ive heard. im assuming a weekend, but keep us posted.

The ride on the 19th. Im not sure what I want to say here. First I am excited about the enthusiasm for the ride and I want everyone to keep that up, but Im going to say it again, I think a multiday ride in the spring/early summer would be better.
Heres my thoughts:
first, I can only go on Sat so I would miss out! plus I dont know if anyone else knows the trails, and I dont know them that great, its easy to get lost, even if youve run them a few times! (Dont ask and I wasnt leading!!) but if you have GPS the way points are posted on Paul Provenchers site, so not to big of a deal.

second the weather and trail conditions, I think the frozen ground, and the drought will make some fairly mild trails even milder. I ran some of these on the 27th to check it out and they are dry dusty and hard, with no water or mud whatsoever, making some fairly difficult stretches easier, spring should change that. The trails in GWNF are not what I would consider too difficult, they are FS roads that are maintained by the FS once every couple of years and have a good deal of hunting traffic and such throughout the year. That said if there is some snow or ice most of the trails up into the mountains will be impassable and dangerous to run leaving fewer trails to run-ie:harder to fill two days.

I have NO DOUBT that everyone who comes will have a great time and time to meet others from the board, but Im just thinking that a spring ride has more going for it when you make it into two or more days. There are trails north and south of Hburg that can be run that are more difficult, which some have expressed interest in.

Anyway, Ill post my trail list in the next few days with the meet points and times(most is above so should be a big suprise), but I wanted to let everyone know my thoughts. If someone is going to lead on Sunday let me know and Ill try and get you some info.

Looking forward to the 19th

Oh yea, I doubt they got any snow in the mtns most of it was East towards the coast, not any out west from this latest storm. Maybe Sun or Mon.

I might be able to do a Tellico trip in the spring. I was there in November on CNC (Central North Carolina 4x4) ride. I tried Slick Rock, didn't make it, but didn't roll  either! Maybe by spring I'll have my front locker.

Well, i guess if some people want to head up for a second day run i say more power. People like Gerald and I how have long drives then we have a pretty good point. Who's saying we couldn't meet up in the spring/summer and do it again in different conditions, get a bit of feel of what you have to look forward to. Sound alright? But, it's not up to me. I'm just along for the ride. I do have GPS that i will bring with me if need be.

Where is this Tellico? This is the first i've heard of it. Maybe some i could try with my truck and setup?

Happy trailes!!
