So, I have a 1993 xlt manual 4x4 that needs a transmission. I got to thinking though, my brother's 2002 Ranger fx4 has a 2nd shifter for 4wd. Is that possible to do on my 1993 Explorer?

absolutely!
Your 93 uses a Borg Warner 1354e transfer case. The E is for electric shift.
You can easily install a 1354m (Manual) t case
You just need the t case and shifter linkage, lever and boot.
Install manual t case and linkage (cut a hole in the floor)
Then you can tap into the 4hi and 4 low wires and remove the electroic shifter stuff completely.
In 1993 your truck was available with both e shift and manual shift t cases just FYI

Sweet, I may give that a go at a later date.
