I was attaching some wires in the engine compartment a few nights ago and noticed how much heat was in there.

Anyone have any experience with the header wrap from Summit Racing? It's only around $25.

I'm thinking about getting some but I'm not sure how it will affect my Explorer if it affects it at all.

Also, what size are the headers on a V6 OHV? Are they 1" or 2"?

They claim the tape will keep the heat in the pipes reducing the heat up to 70%. I do have a Flowmaster 50 and they said the Flowmaster takes some heat away from the engine compartment as well. I think with header wrap and some sort of cold air intake, everything will just be better.

Thanks..

I had Summit header wrap on my Monte Carlo. It did help keep the under hood temps down (worked great for my starter heat soak problems), but unless you have SST headers, it will accelerate corrosion. When the truck is sitting, any moisture that develops on the pipes will be held there by the wrap instead of evaporating. That's one of the reasons that most header mfg will not warrant headers that have been wrapped.

Well JDraper, what about ceramic-coated headers, like JBA's? They won't rust, even wrapped, will they?

Ceramic coated shouldn't rust either, unless the ceramic is cracked or gouged down to the base metal.

I just have stock headers.

Do you think a problem will happen with stock?

And.. how hard are they to put on? You probably have to spend some time under the truck. ;)

I would think trying to wrap them installed would be a sob!! There are so many things in the way. I did the headers on my 350 when they were lying on the garage floor. It's a lot like wrapping bicycle handlebars with tape.

BTW, I don't know how the tape would hold up to offroading. Give Summit's tech line a call. They are pretty decent about answering questions.

Quick, go here Design Engineering Exhaust Wrap Kit

This kit contains everything you need to wrap your headers, including stainless steal locking ties to prevent the wrap from coming undone along with HT Silicone Coating to protect the wrap and your headers from water and other nasties. The spray should also prevent rust since it will repel the water.

big tig, i already gave that link, kinda. i gave it to their home page site. i stole it from your other post on another thread about intakes :)

Hey Quick, I don't think you HAVE headers. The stock part is called an exhaust manifold, and is a non-tubular cast iron piece. It would be impossible to wrap it with header tape and do a decent (effective) job. But, I'm no expert, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

bill, i think you are right let me go check, having no hood makes it easy :).......

jimabena74, "Why you dirt rat" :D

Just kidding, I must of read over it.

Quick...keep looking around the site. They've got some tape that is for the headers. Get about 2 rolls. Forget the headers....they're a pain in the a## to do if they're stock. Wrap the Crud out of the intake. Helps keep the air cooler. I noticed a drop in the Vegas heat. It works. :)

could i use some of this stuff on my stock intake on my 96 xlt?

I've got the KKN on there now. I was able to wrap the entire intake up to the filter. If you have the box you'll need another roll. Do that too!! I got this idea from a write up in a 4wheeling mag on a f150. They did dino tests that showed it helped. I can't see why you couldn't

Not to drift this thread too much away from headers but since we're talking intake wrapping...

Go to www.martelbros.com as has already been mentioned--they sell the Design Engineering product called "Cool Tape" and it's NOT for wrapping the headers. But it works GREAT for wrapping the intake tract. I bought the middle size roll (I think 30') and it was enough to wrap the air tube on top, the air intake going into the airbox, and 3/4's of the stock airbox. So if you have the stock airbox you'll need to buy the biggest roll, to really do it right. I don't plan to have the stock airbox too much longer anyway.

Benefits for me include elimination of pre-detonation on hot days under load. It probably gave 1 or 2 hp too, but heck I can't tell.
From the factory, Ford insulates the turbo air intakes on those F350 Turbo Diesel trucks in a similar way.

at summit the part number is THE-11002
