Headlight wiring issue

I'm new here, nice too see somewhere where you can shoot the breeze and get some good info. My old man's truck, an 01 Explorer Sport. He bought aftermarket HID bulbs and installed them himself. Driver side was dim, so upon pulling the bulb i noticed the pigtail socket was half burnt out due to the connection not being tight. Or so I thought. Bought a new a pigtail and spliced the wires. Worked fine for a day. Then the other night. Passenger side went dim and now the headlights are dead. Pulled both bulbs and found the one I replaced is completely burnt and melted. Possibly crossed the wires when I spliced? But why did it work fine for a day. Haven't checked yet but I"m assuming the relay is shot too. Fuses are fine. Any ideas????

I would get rid of the new bulbs & get some Sylvania Silverstars or just stock.
Sounds like the bulbs are too high wattage for your wiring.
There are no relays for the headlights, just fuses.
