I need a quick and somewhat certain answer!!!

..... Generally speaking,..... will a 1997 transmission/transfer case fit a 1994?

Mine is a '94,... and I need to replace my tranny..... and I just found a 1997 Explorer that has been burned crispy. (But the undercarrige is wonderful).

But it might be getting crushed, tomorrow..... if I don't buy it, quick!

..... Whaddya think?

um what engine is in the 97?
And are we talking auto transmission?

All I know for sure is that it's a six-cylinder. MINE is auto with overdrive. I'll need to make certain that the "Parts" truck is auto/overdrive as well.

..... (I'm just hoping there hasn't been any major renovations over those few years in the mechanical attributes).

What worries me is that MINE has the U-Joint front steering, and the other truck has C.V. joints. (Yeech).

(I tend to believe that the steering has nothing to do with the transmission).

I realize that my information may still be a bit vague, but it's all I've got...right now,.........but thanks for any help I can get. ;)

Your 94 has an A4LD auto trans with a 3-4 shift solenoid and a TCC solenoid. Those are the only electronic controls.

The 97 has a 5R55E auto trans which looks similar to the A4LD, but is completely electronically controlled with shift solenoids for all gears and an EPC (electronic pressure control) solenoid. The PCM controls all shifting functions. Its really a different animal.

The 97 transfer case is a 4405 Control Trac with Auto 4wd (always in 4wd). Its controlled by the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) located in the crispy dashboard.

So, unless you are willing to transplant the electronic controls that you need for the trans and transfer case, I would say no. There are a lot of mechanical differences between the 94 and the 97, but even more important are the electronic differences.

*Sigh* :(

..... Thanks, friend............ I guess I'll keep looking.

Have you read Glacier991's A4LD rebuild diary, and A4LD valve body rebuild diary? Maybe you could rebuild your transmission instead of buying a new one.

I'm getting a used tranny from a local junkyard for $150.00.

..... But I just found the A4LD rebuild diary, and fully intend to rebuild my old one, if it's at all possible. (ie:... not too totally damaged). ;)

Sounds like fun. :D

The 94 A4LD was the most updated version of the A4LD, so don't get a transmission older than this from the junkyard. How many miles are on that transmission, and your current defective transmission? You should replace the torque converter with a remanufactured one, and not with the old one. Flush out your cooler lines before installing the junkyard one with M465KD Transcool cooler cleaner spray ($7.09).
