P.S. thank you for showing me that
If I am not mistaken, the 2 wheel drive Exporers have the same wheel bearing as the 4 wheel drive Explorers, so I do not think leaving the drive axle out actually did anything to cause it to come apart. I may be mistaken, it has been awhile since I did a wheel bearing on a 2 wheel drive Explorer. With that said, I believe the main culprit of the problem was a bad wheel bearing. The axle just help the junk parts together.
You are correct in the different design, I did not see the year. With that said, I stillo do not believe the axle helps hold the wheel hub in. It is pressed in, if you look at the picture, you can see how bad the bearing looks. I still believe the bearing was bad, and that is why everything came apart.
Explain to me what "holds" everything together on....let's say a 2008 2WD Explorer?
The 08 4WD and 2WD use the same front wheel bearing, so what "holds" the 2WD together???
Idunno, this is the 1995-2001 sub forum though--
What does it matter here?
A retainer ring

So, based on what you say and what is shown in your (partial) picture, the only thing that holds in place the bearing inside the knuckle during lateral loading (curves) is the split retainer ring #12... not the axle nut that is not shown.I can understand why you think that, it just is not true.
