My 2001 doing same thing I going to send it to scrap yard and will never buy a ford again, 1000.00 in to it replaced everything and had locksmith tell me he couldn't program it any one know how to bypass system completely it's costing me 25 a day where it's sitting and been there a month

Had no issue with my '99? Bought a new cylinder and keys, locksmith came, reprogrammed it, and she cranked right up fine. Was like $50. That I'm aware of no one really has a way of bypassing it, want to say maybe a handful have. Pop-a-lock redid mine fine, may be able to help yours?
 






You can’t bypass it unless you have your computer flashed.

The locksmith should have told you why it wouldn’t program. The theft light should blink a code. Figure that out and post here, and we’ll help you.

that sounds like the locksmith issue. ford built it this way so it is hard to steal, etc. as mike pointed out, computer needs reflash to recognize the keys. dont junk it!!!
 






The locksmith should be able to program keys to the factory equipment. Put it all back. Good locksmith will be able to tell if one of the components is bad. As of now his hands are tied as you have vin info all confused by mixing in another PCM and pats .

Also, might be a good idea to tow it home.

Didn't really appreciate you telling me to scrap my truck in the ignition lock thread where I show how to fix new lock to existing keys. Mine is running fine thank you.

You must have come across an incompetent (or dishonest) locksmith, if it was working previously and you only lost the keys.

I assume you still have the old PCM? Put it back in, have a different locksmith come to where it's stored if the storage place will allow that, or tow it off their property, deciding if a short tow and having a mobile locksmith come to it, is cheaper than towing it to the locksmith.

Also this seems like it could be a small claims case against the first locksmith, if s/he doesn't issue a refund. Where is it sitting and why is it sitting there costing $25/day?

Seems like Many Mistakes Were Made. This doesn't really have anything to do with it being a Ford.

If you don't mind a thief being able to start your truck with a screwdriver jammed into the ignition, you may have the PCM (computer) reprogrammed to get rid of PATS. Search this forum for a guy who does this. Otherwise, as already stated, get a competent locksmith. In any case, there is nothing specific to Ford here - virtually every vehicle built in this century has something similar.

Sorry about that just fed up with mine another day wasted on it so step kid going to have to come up with money to replace explorer he is one who lost keys I've missed work for a month and a half besides what I spent out of pocket.
 






I found the cheap knock off keys won't program. Need to get actual OEM keys.
Not quite sure that I buy that, as I have a 3rd party spare... think it's an Ilco H72, and there are thousands of reviews on Amazon for 3rd party keys.

That doesn't necessarily mean there aren't bad keys or wrong for this generation. I'd just get an Ilco as they may be the world's largest aftermarket, not a fly by night generic maker. I would not buy a key if it was just called H72 as some other generics might call theirs that, rather that it's a genuine Ilco.

There is no reason to replace the Explorer over this issue. You need to replace the locksmith because the one you used, turned a relatively simple thing into the PITA it has become. All you need is a competent locksmith, and your money back!

This exactly! Just make sure everything is back together and grab a better company, if ya can, get your previous cash back. Because this is getting ridiculous, it's really not that big of a deal as long as ya find someone proper, no need to replace the X since it ain't its fault. Again, it's a maximum of a 30 minute process, shouldnt be even 15 if I'm honest, relatively inexpensive as well. I called pop-a-lock for mine, not sure if ya got one local, but try them or someone else with good reviews and all, really is not that big of a problem.

I have about eight aftermarket 2nd gen Explorer PATS keys. All of those I have had cut and programmed do work. I think I have two spare unused keys still, I need to use them for my last 98.


BTW, the cost of the programming is very reasonable now, be glad. It used to be a Ford serviced only job, we used to read $100 or more 20 years ago.

Scrap value is around $300... does anyone near Lakewood washington, want a $300 '01 EB Explorer? Wait, if still in storage at $25/day for a month, then $750 to get it out.

I'd still like to know how this all came about, maybe a scam to get you paying more storage fees than it should've cost to just cut and program two keys?

Don't know your location, but if there's a pop-a-lock franchise near you, they HAVE those key blanks, will come out to you and program them too - I just had to call them to get a spare key as I lost my spare. Was $80 for them to travel 20 mi. to me and do it. Disclaimer: I don't work for them, just have been pleased with their service.

I have a 2002 sport trac that key cylinder broke and getting it out it fell apart! We bought a new one with transponder keys and found out we would have to hire a locksmith to come program it! Long story short after trying everything, I bout a VEEPEAK MS(for MS-CAN & OBD 2). It connects to OBD port and laptop at the same time and costs abou $30 on Amazon. Also ordered correct transponder keys for my model(less than $2 each) you can find this on ford website. Returned key cylinder with transponder keys, got new key cylinder without transponders, took no transponder and new not cut transponder keys to be cut at Walmart, paid ford $10 for a year of use to be able to program or diagnose with OBD 2 , get into a program on computer to register and everything is explained step by step on how to do everything! It sounds like a lot but for less money than the original key cylinder with transponder keys, I have the ability and license to use the OBD2 programmer for a year on any ford! We tried bypassing PATS SYSTEM, but without original cylinder and keys it won’t work on a ford! You do have to make sure the keys ordered from Amazon are the right ones for your year and model ford also! It’s a good and bad thing about fords, it prevents theft, but dang if it isn’t aggravating figuring it all out! Hope this helps! By the way, I’m an old woman and if I can do it! LOL

id say around mid 90s on nearly all the turn keys use those, except kia apparently? havent looked into that yet, just heard about it.

Kia and Hyundai non push to starts. There’s also a few models of a few makes that come without them. It’s on 95%+ of the new cars sold.
