Help me identify this sound (with video)

I noticed a squeak coming from under the hood the other morning, and so I replaced the serpentine belt this morning, it was a pain in the a** by the way. Anyways now the squeak is gone, but now something is making a howling/whistling sound. It seems to be coming from around the power steering pump area, somewhere in the front corner.

sounds like one of the pullies is not spinning like it should....

Next step is to take that belt back off and spin all of the accessory pullies by hand to see what doesn't feel right. Or maybe it's just a bad belt. Aldive had a thread a while ago about how the first two belts he bought were no good.

I had a problem that sounded like that and it was the compressor. If that is what it is you can check by disconnecting the electrical connection at the compressor. If the noise goes away then your compressor is suffering from what they call "black death" and will have to be replaced.

You said the problem seems to be coming from around the power steering pump and the compressor is in that area.

disconnect the switch on your AC accumulator bottle-
this will keep the compressor from kicking on.

If the noise is still there--
remove the serpentine belt-and start the truck.
Is the noise still there?
Let's eliminate things one at a time--

Well, the downside is that I have nothing of value to contribute to this thread. The upside is that everyone will think you have supercharger while the noise is there, lol.

Ok, I unplugged the connection at the compressor, sound was still there, so I took the belt off and the power steering pully isn't spinning very freely, it will turn when I move it, but stops 1/4 to 1/2 turn after my hand stops applying force to it, is that how it should be?

that was one of my first thoughts, but I would be embarrased to have people think there is a supercharged v8 under the hood and see it go so slow

if the noise is gone--it's probably the PS pump-
let's hear it while you turn the steering wheel back and forth--with belt back on

Ok, the sound is gone with the belt removed, I'll go put it back on and take another video

ok, now I'm about 95% sure it's a bad belt, I had to go check on my friends cat, and it was screaming, it really did sound like it was supercharged, so I'm going to eat some lunch and then go put the old belt back on and see what happens

I'll explain for the rest of you, I put the old belt back on and it was quiet. So I took the new belt back to O Rielly's and told the kid behind the counter that I had just bought the belt this morning and that it was bad and I wanted a replacement. He looked it over for a minute and told me that it was a brand new belt it couldn't be bad. I told him that that belt made it sound like my motor was supercharged. He responded that that was "normal" for their house brand belts. At that time a couple of mechanics who were in there buying parts started nodding their heads and told him that I was describing a bad belt. He told me that he could give me another one, but it would do the same thing, or I could get the name brand belt, which was twice the price so I just paid the difference and got the hell out of there I didn't want to fight about with some idiot that didn't know what he was talking about. The new belt is much nicer anyway, it was worth the extra money.

I went into talk to the woman I usually talk to there (she really knows her stuff and will tell me when the house brand is ok, and when I should stay away from it) she apologized for the way he acted, and said that he was already pretty close to losing his job. I think in the future I need to just wait for one of the employee's that have been there forever and know their stuff, rather than trying to explain my problems to the kids that constantly coming and going.
