I have Goodyear Wrangler RT/S 255 70R 16's on my truck and from what I've read on here and my experiance....the tires are crap. I'm thinking of going with the Michelin LTX M/S. It seems to get great reviews on here, but if anyone knows a better tire or one as good and cheaper, could you tell me. I drive this truck everyday city roads, country roads and interstate...ice, snow, rain all weather and frequently have my grandkids with me. Its a 2001 Explorer Sport 4x4.
Little background..about 4 mths ago I took my truck in for a roaring noise in the front. Had tires rotated and rebalanced, front end alignement..helped the noise but didn't get rid of it. Mechanic told me it was probably my tires since I was close to needing new ones. Fast forward to this week, the noise got unbearable and the front end went nuts on the interstate. I had to have upper ball joints and an inner tie rod replaced. Front end feels much better!!! BUT..still the %*$# noise! So, I'm now looking at buying new tires.

If your just looking for a highway tire that can do light mud and snow then the LTX will suit you just fine. Something else you may want to look at would be BFG rugged trails if they have them in that size, or Michelin X Radial LT. My experiences are only in Michelin, BFG and Uniroyal because that's what i sell at work, so to go outside those bounds others will have to chime in.

Yes, the Wrangler RT/S tires suck! I have also had the Michelin LTX M/S when I first bought the truck (used) but the tread was so low I couldn't really tell you if they're any good.

Ultimately, I ended up picking up a set of Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT's for the following reasons:

- Price was good, cheaper than comparably reviewed tires
- M+S tire that is also mountain-snowflake stamped (has worked well this past winter which was a big selling point for me)
- Treadwear is rated at 500 (pretty high for a "winter" certified tire I think)
- Deep tread (12mm vs typical 10mm)
- Fairly well reviewed

The only thing is that the shop I purchased from screwed up my order and gave me the LT version instead of the Passenger tires. I don't really mind this but it ended up costing me a bit more and ride is probably slightly harsher.

I just took off a set of Michelins LTX M/S. 90,000 miles and still passed inspection. Replaced with same. Great tire. Period. :salute:

i just got a set of Michelins LTX A/T2, had another set with 70k on them. I found them to be great in the snow, like snowmobile fast, great on dirt back roads too. .on the soft side, and a very slight tire noise with the windows down and on dry pavement. Little pricey.
M/S is leans more toward highway while the A/T is more all terrain but both are great tires.
