I have a 1997 ford explorer 4 wheel drive..i only have a knob that u can put on "auto.low.or high" its in auto...my four wheel drive kicks in automatically making a grinding noise/popping...anyway i know its the 4 wheel drive...can someone please tell me how i can disconnect the 4 wheel drive and still drive it?..i use my truck alot and money is an issue right now please help..before it decides to kick in and leave me on the side of the road...thank u so much
 






Pull the 4x4 fuse. I think it's also a fuse for lights somewhere? Not sure.

You can also take out the front drive shaft, that way, even if 4x4 engages, it can't spin the front wheels.
 












yes. the "brown wire mod" is the easiest thing to try. as i understand it, it eliminates the AUTO 4wd engagement feature. you can simply cut the wire, or add a toggle switch to be able to turn it on/off.
