The Explorer is alot heavier than a Mustang so I doubt it would hold up.
You did not mention if it is 2wd or AWD. If it's AWD there is alot more involved with changing the tranny.

2WD and im thinking if i can make it 5 speed it would make it alot more fun to drive... i have done these types of swaps on ap cars and its easy but never tryed an explorer...i know the V6 comes 5 sped would that consol work with the mustang tranny ( i can get a Cobra R tranny ).... and what shifter would i have to use

If I was going to do a manual swap on a 98 with the SOHC, I'd be looking at the manual trans in the Rangers coupled with a 13-54 manual-shift transfer case. You should be able to find that whole rig in a Ranger in a salvage yard. I'd be worried that the shifter linkage on anything out of a Mustang would be a pain in the butt to try and cram into an Explorer.

well i wanted mustang trans for the ratio then the explorer would be like an over grown sports car lol... and being a 5.0 i dont think the rnager trans would help

no1 has any idea on what to do???

I missed the mention of the 5.0 in my original post. Ignore that one.

Not a common swap. Trying to make the PATS and ECU work with anything other than the stock auto would be a pain in the butt. Would it bolt up? Sure. Would the transfer case? Doubtful. The Mustang was never made with 4 wheel drive (obviously) so there would be transfer case and driveshaft issues. You'll definately be in for a challenge trying to find someplace that can hybridize the trans to accommodate a transfer case.

I'd be looking at a manual trans out of a pre-97 F-150. You could use that one, bolt a manual transfer case to it (or even an Atlas case) and still have the 4wd. It may still require some fancy electronics to make the engine run, but might work.

well i put a cobra R tranny in a 89 ranger with a 302 i built and it works fine so if i can get it into this explorer i jus need to find a place to mount my shifter lol but i dont want to loose my computer that is in the center for the gas milage and ll that crap cuz that runs all your lights in the dash ( check engine and all them)

ok guys thanks for tryin but im taking no1 has seen it done wish me luck and ill post when its done im tryin to get parts now to start
