I have a 2001 exlporer xls v6 4.0soch and today on our way home the lights suddenly dimmed and check engine light came on( we have a system set up but a seperate battery output for it) we made it home~ and now it has full lights etc. But when it idles, its fine, put adding gas and putting in gear, it acts as if it wants to stall. we have disconnected to battery to check if it the alternator, and still ran. We havent had the plugs changed yet, just the oil recently. The check engine light is on, and when the truck is running, its making a sparking noise near the alternator. can someone help throw some ideas over so I can fix asap. thanx!

...Two things come to mind...Check your codes and definately check the wiring where you heard the sparking noise...Probably the alternator wiring is grounding out..

Mine did a bunch of wierd crap like that right before the battery died...

yea, he disconnected the 2nd battery, and unhooked the original battery, but it still runs, until it goes in gear. its frustating me now. we just cant figure it out

i just took it around the block, it has full power, but when i arrive at the stop sign and idle, it acts as if it wants to stall.and the check engine light is off now too

If you have to keep driving it in this condition, keep a fire extinguisher in the cab...

umm no. its in the garage and im not drive it now. more than likely its the alternator and we are going to take it out to be tested

we just took it the mechanic.. and its the plugs and wires. whew

did that solve the problem? Mine has been doing that and it was a clogged fuel filter lol

yes! it did. there was a cracked cermamic plug when he pulled them, my husband did it himself, pain in the a**, cuz he had to pull the right wheel off, but now se has full power and runs great!
