2000 Ford explorer
Hello. I went to Napa to get a filter and gasket and the guy said there could be 5 different trannys for my explorer. I looked at the tacked thread about tranny ID but I'm still confused. It gives a letter code, but Wich letter is that in the vin?
My explorer is a 2000 Eddy Bauer with 4.0 v6 2wd. How can I identify my tranny?
TIA.

There are four(maybe five)possible transmissions for the 2nd gens(95-01), but only two you need to consider, and yours is the one 2001 automatic V6 trans, the 5R55E. People who rely on books alone are idiots.

Yours is 2WD you said, so you should be able to find that filter at any parts store, just by telling them it's a 2001 V6 automatic, 2WD Explorer, that is all they need to know. Rock Auto is a good deal cheaper than most parts store choices, and NAPA is about the highest cost for any parts.

use a wix or motorcraft filter......duralast and powertorque are "meh"
The wix and Ford units use a dacron filter media which is what you want.

My Haynes manual says all v6 1997 on would be 5r55e. I wonder why the Napa guy had such a problem. Mines a 2000, btw.
That tacked thread at the top of this forum seems messed up. In different places it says the 5R55E is a 4 speed and a 5 speed. I never knew I had 5 speeds. It only has 3 positions on the shifter and the OD button.

The 4r55e was only used in 95 and 96 4.0 Explorers
The 5r55e IS a 4 speed transmission, the difference is the computer creates a false second gear....the computer uses 1st gear and overdrive to create a second gear shift....this is why the 97+ 4.0L explorers all use a 5r55e.

4WD uses a filter with a deep sump. The parts man should know since you told him that you have 2WD (RWD only).

The part guy was looking at a book(or screen), and didn't know how to read it. Some people just need to learn some more.

O.T. sort of.... is there a letter in the Vin that indicates what transmission is installed? If so which place in the code is it and what letter represents what transmission?

Isn’t it the torque converter locking?

The problem is the parts guys these days don’t really make much money, and it’s not a job a seasoned car guy gets into. There’s much better money in most other auto related careers.

A4LD's and all the 4R's also had TCC lockup.
I’m referring to the second gear in the 5r. It’s not a “gear”, it’s 1st with the lockup.
