I took off the door panel on the rear right door, to investigate why the window wont go down.....well....LOL

I found a completely rusted VICE GRIP holding the window up, HAHA. man this sucks, i dont know hows it supossed to work now lol.

anyways, i'll resort to my Ford Service Manual for help.

Got a 2" rusted c-clamp on my left rear from the last owner.

I used to have a Grand Cherokee where the window actuator gave up because the insides were made of plastic so the window just dropped down. That happened on both the driver and passenger side front doors (not at the same time). Until I could get the replacement assemby I did exactly that, put a pair of vice grips in there to hold the window up and closed everything back up.

My brothers xtera broke the regulator while camping. Instead of wasting a pair of vice grips we took a piece of wood and cut it so it would fit between the bottom of the door and the window. One wire tie later and now the window stays up.

I just installed a pair of vise grips in my right rear door panel to hold the window up! The plastic bushings in my lift motor are good, but the cables were broken that move the window up and down. I'm trying to figure out the best way to replace or repair the regulator. I thought I was alone with the vise-grip thing....

I got both of mine on eBay. The first on costed about 130 bucks, the other one costed about 30 bucks (guy didn't know what he had).

I know this thread is a few months old, but has anyone ever replaced those broken/frayed wires in the regulator before? The vice-grip in my driver's side rear door is there because I stuck it in there...

It just seemed wrong to buy another and replace it when the motor still worked.

I have replaced the wires in my rear passenger side regulator...I had one broken bottom cable, and one broken top cable, so I made 1 good regulator out of the 2. It took some time to figure it out too...but it is TOTALLY a viable option...

But if you have another regulator, why not just replace it....

Yeah I know it's crude, I may have access to a replacement regulator, my buddy has a couple XL's in his junk yard. I'm thinkning that they are hand crank windows though...

I was considering getting some high quality bicycle shift/brake cable and fixing my own regulator. Some stainless cable would be nice...

Exactly what I found in my Drivers side rear window. 2 x4 cut to size.

THe wire to the regulator is broken. Very common on these cars

Did you have to fully disassemble it or were you able to play with the entire regulator in the door?
