I have a 1997 XLT, 5.0, AWD, AUTOMATIC
My transfer case is all screwed up... thunking and clunking from takeoff until it goes thru the gears.. then it is ok.
I need a transfer case.. how do i know if a used one will fit up? Can I rebuild mine?
Is there any way to decifer the numbers on the tag?
Thanks for any and all comments and suggestions.

The good news is that transfer cases are abundant at wrecking yards. If there is a pull n save just go wander around and look for one that seems tight. You'll find them laying around as people pull the trannies and leave the t-cases. If you have to buy one from a wrecking yard try to dicker. They have a pile of them for the afore mentioned reason. $50 bucks max in my opinion. I don't know what model is in your X. You'll have to research on this forum and find out. Try the 95-2001 Explorer section.

Since you will be pulling the case if it does need repairs--

I would look at the front drive shaft first. When it goes bad it causes the sound you describe. Remove the front drive shaft and inspect the transfer case end real well, any tear in the rubber is the tell tale sign.

You may well have a bad transfer case, drive shaft, or even both.

The drive shaft may be one of 2-( or in your case maybe 3) different lengths, so, for replacement, measure between the yoke weld beads for length

if I recall correctly, it will be either 22-3/4
or
23-7/8" long
