High milage explorers?

'93 XLT with 112,000
Major Items:
Transmission (at 75,620 miles - Ford didn't cover because it was 620 miles over warranty<G> )

Regular maintenance including plugs, filter (K+N) and brakes. Had minor problem with the engaging motor on the differential - turned out to be dirt (wash your undercarriage)

BTW - I love this site - just joined a few days ago and have great ideas for cosmetic and performance mods - I'll post my thoughts later and any feedback would be appreciated!

1995 Sport 95K miles.
No major breakages.
Normal tune up and wear. Oil,Filters, Fluids, Brake pads, coolant etc.
Some off and on annoyances: Check Engine light on long trips every once in a while. Oil pressure sender possessed. Radio went nuts for a day and then was fine.Gets dirty off road and won't wash itself.
Overall very happy with our truck.

update
1992 XLT 4dr 4x4 with 157,000 miles

only thing replaced since then was the water pump, rotors and fuel pump

never did a lift and don't plan on it either. this has to last me at least through college (graduate in about a year).

1991 4.0, 4x4, four door, XLT. I have been off road quite a few times but drive 120 miles a day (several speeding tickets). I do not babby the truck but do take care of it. General up keep and maintence, nothing major at all has needed to be fixed.

185,000 miles and counting.

94 Explorer XLT 94,000 Miles
Penzoil every 3,000 Miles
Fram Tough Guard Filter every 3,000 Miles
Boshe Platinum +4 Plugs 23,000 miles ago
KKM Filter
Flowmaster II Exahust
Custom Converter
Warn Manual Hubs
89 Octane Citgo Gas
89 Octane Sunoco Gas

I added lift and tires about 4,000 miles ago. I noticed no real problems. I will be adding gear hopefully this summer. Right now I'm running 3.73's and I still get relatively decent gas mileage with little loss of acceleration and power. I'm a second owner. I got the Explorer in 96 with like 35,000 miles on it. All in all I love it.

It gets me places I'd never thought it go. Dead Link Removed

92 XLT 4x4 w/ 137000 miles (99.8% onroad)

Tires (2x)
Rotors
Radiator (dealer said so and it was under warranty, so...)
Recuring A/C leaks (needs recharged about once/year)
Transmission Rebuilt twice (2nd time under warranty)
Torque Convertor (also under warranty)
Plugs (3x)
Plug Wires
Battery
Air Cleaner (4x)
Rear U-joints
Auto-Hubs (now Warn Manual)
1 headlight and 1 taillight
Exhaust from Catylic back

What next?:
Rotors turned
Radius Arm Bushings
New Intake Manifold Gasket

My Explorer has been very reliable and the biggest money hogs have been the Tranny and the A/C. Nearly everything else has been normal wear and tear. If the motor ever goes I'm probally going to swap in a 5.0L not only for power :-) but also to get rid of that tranny.

'96 XL 4x4 109K kms (68K miles)

Parts that died and needed replacing:

O2 Sensor @ 108K kms (check engine light)
Flexplate @ 100K kms (left me stranded - grrr)
Passenger front wheel bearings @ 105K kms (requires whole hub as it's now a sealed unit - big $$$ - grrr)

Regular maintenance:

Brake Pads @ 80K kms (all around)
Plugs @80K kms
Tires @ 70K kms
Plug wires @ 40K kms (performance more than maintenance)
Tranny service every 30K kms
Full tranny fluid flush @ 90K kms
Radiator flush @ 50K & 90K kms
Oil change every 5K kms (synthetic)
Synthetic fluid in tranny, both diffs, transfer case.

Performance:

K&N filter (No airbox)
Borla cat-back exhaust
Taylor spiro-pro wires
Synthetics all around
2" torsion bar/add-a-leaf lift
Removed rear swaybar
31x10.5 Yokohama Geolandar A/Ts

Trouble spots that need attending:

Burnt out dash lights (2 I think)
Shocks starting to show age and useage (Edelbrocks in the future)
Vibration when in 4WD - maybe front driveshaft angle due to torsion lift?

I bought my 91 Explorer, MAR 95. It has the 4 liter and A4LD Trans. It came w/ 75k miles on it (currently 185k)and since then I have replaced the following parts:

-Fuel pump.
-Rear main seal 3x. I paid somebody to do it twice and the 3rd time I did it my self.
-water pump.
-Converted the A/C to R34 w/compressor, hoses, orifice tube.
-Power steering pump x3 its still leaking.
-Intake gaskets.
-Muffler, removed the resonator.
-Installed a JD 2.5 in lift and 2 in Body lift last X-Mas, also replaced front upper and lower ball joints.
-Trans filter every 50k miles.
-U Joints.
-Belts every 50k miles.
-Mod air box.
-Spark plug wires.
-Replaced rotors.

Not bad considering I have pulled an 18' Boat across the country twice with the original Trans.

91 XLT with 70,000 miles.
I have replaced the plugs and wires. Retrofitted the air conditioning with the new refrigerant due to total failure of the original air. Three brake jobs.
Radial arm bushing once. 2 batteries.

Need a new paint job, replace door handles, front windshield, and possibly a new thermostat. I have heard that the original thermostat may cause the engine to run cold. I have noticed this (the gauge never rises to normal) and the heat takes a LONG time to warm up.

Am thinking about a suspension lift kit. Anyone have any recommendations. I mainly drive on pavement but do a lot of hunting and fishing on weekends and would like better off road performance.

The only trouble I have had out of either of my trucks is the brakes arent the most maintenance free things on the planet, the auto hubs in the 92 gave out the day I got mud tires on it (replaced with warns) ,other than driver error They both have been excellent trucks. 98 eb has only 46,000 miles , nothing gone wrong (knock on wood) , the 92 has 146,000 on it ,the only expensive thing that I have replaced is I was getting pulled out and didnt have tow hooks , so put the chain around the axle , it came loose and snatched my tie rod and pulled the two tires so they faced each other,($450.00). The Explorers are great trucks and I will be an Explorer owner all my life, whether just a play toy or a daily driver.

I have a '91 4dr, XLT, 4.0, auto. I bought it in May of '99 with 102,000 on it. It has 112,375 miles on it now. Here's what I had to fix in the first few months that I had it:
Auto trans-rebuilt
Front wheel bearings
TPS unit
All rocker arms
Heater hose
Wiring
Auto hubs(should have gotten manuals)
Arm rest bracket
Luckily, my Explorer had a 60 day warrenty on it, and the dealer fixed everything but the wiring. I think that the people who owned it before me didn't take very good care of it. Since we got the problems fixed, (about eight months ago) I haven't had any problems with it. It runs really well, is pretty good off-road, and still gets about 21 MPG on the highway.

Anyone else that hasen't responded? Maybe we can hit 100!

I have a '98 EB two-wheel drive V8. I purchased this baby last Mar'99. Current mileage is 8600 (I take public transportation when going to work).

I've taken it to the dealer where I bought the truck bec. of the ff reasons:
1.) recall (throttle body-cruise control)
2.) leak near the drive shaft. They replaced something that is called "yoke?". After two nights and a leather jacket (got stolen), I finally got my truck back.
3.) scheduled oil change (free for two years).
I am very much satisfied with my truck.

Upgrades so far:
Borla Exhaust System
Lowered 1 3/4" with Edelbrock shocks

Future Upgrades:
Cobra-R rims

Long-term goal:
Supercharger
