I would like to know if anyone else has had this happen to them. I went wheelin two weeks ago for about 5-6 hours, and then i had to drive home for about 2 hours. The whole time i had my CD player playing. I was about half way home when the Cd player just shut off. I try to turn the Cd player back on and it wouldn't, and then the word HEAT come on screen. The radio worked but the cd didn't. I did take the cd out and that thing was HOT. Anyway i waited for about3-4 hours and it work fine again. Is this normal. By the way, i have a old poineer head unit, its about 4 yaers old. lata

I don't believe that this is just a problem with Pioneers, with other head units (including Ford's factory CD systems). There have been many complaints about Ford's CD's and CD changers shutting off after a few hours, often with the message "HOT" on the display.

Mine never says "hot" or "heat", but sometimes wiggs out in the Texas summer heat. It's the factory HU with the factory 6 disc console changer. I just let it cool for a few minutes, and it's ok. It's usually just when I turn the truck on or want to get the cartridge out. Tip: a small handheld battery powered fan works wonders to get the changer to work.

I have a fairly new Pionner head unit and after I have it on for a couple hours it does cut off and HEAT shows up on the display. I usually just let it cool for about 10 minutes and it's fine.

i had a nice clarion pro audio HU about a year ago until the heat finally permamnently killed it. i now have one of those new(new at one time) panasonic HU (forget which model but its in my sig) to avoid this sort of thing from happening again i modified my dash a little. hears what i did:
this will most likely only work on 91-94 2wd (or 4wd with manual t-case) explorer, these are the worst about heat because of the lack of size and air circulation in the dash

when you remove your dash there is a wiring harness that plugs into the spot where the 4wd switch would be, i removed the harness and shoved it back into the dash

i then got a cpu fan and mounted it in thereso that it draws air out of the area above the head unit and along the front of the dash(yes i know it not the most "effencient" way to cool that area but i have never had a problem with over heating since, NEVER)

it does make a little bit of noise but if you mount it on there nice and tight you wont hardly be able to hear it, and i garauntee if you do it right you will not be able to hear it with the engine running, hope this helps

It's the dash design guys, the ducts for the dash run up and over the head unit, if you got the heat on you, it's also on your head unit, next time turn the vent on cool or the ac on, the only time my pioneer acts up is the dead of winter, heats keeping me and my unit toasty..

Yea, thought it might have somethin to do with the heat duct being so close, but it has never happened to me before and this is the 4th year with the same HU, maybe its just getting old too. but thanks for the replys. lata

I've never had the headunit say HOT or HEAT but if I play a CD for like 20 mintues and then take it out it's really hot. Is this normal? It doesnt' happen in my home CD player so I'm just wondering if everything is normal.

mrsteve,
If your CD is really hot after 20 mins, something is wrong. But it all depends on what is really hot to you. I've been a chef, so my can stand very hot temp. My cd was so hot that i couldn't hold it, im surprized it was soft from the heat. lata
