What holds the brake pads inside the caliper in 97 Xs? When I last had my caliper off the rotor, one of the pads pretty much came right out. Nevertheless, I seated it back inside and went on with my business, and everything seemed fine. But now, a couple of weeks later, one of the pads must be slightly touching the rotor, because I get the awful screeching sound while driving. So I’m wondering if there was supposed to be some clip or something holding the pad in place.

More than likely the screeching is the little wear indicator. It start to make contact with the rotor once the pads get to low to let you know to replace them.

Nah, there's plenty of pad left. And the screeching is during normal driving, not braking. When I brake, the pads make full contact and the screeching goes away.
