I have an 03 Explorer with the 4.0 V6. I was getting a real bad sulfur type smell a few days ago. It smelled like it was coming from the battery and it was so hot I couldn't hold my hand on it, so i check it and the alternator. The alternator was overcharging the battery and had already ruined the old one, so replaced both. Now I'm getting that smell again. Took it to muffler shop and the guy banged around on the exhaust and said the downstream cat was bad. I could hear a little rattle from it. The metal under heat shield looks very discolored. Midas says there ok. How can I tell for sure if it needs one and what that smell is? If I need to replace it can i buy single cat or do I have to buy complete unit with all three?
