 I have a 1999 Explorer with a V6 Vin code E. I have had a problem with the transmission OD light flashing. I'm not to good with the new stuff, but my question is how do you read the trans codes? Meaning, in order to get the code do you check when the vehical is running or after you get the flashing light turn the truck off on the key to on and then scan. I had the parts store check for the OD light code but they said that there is no code. When you turn the truck off and back on the light stops blinking, did it just reset. God I'm confused and frustrated. HELP Please I love this truck and would hate to say good bye to her.

I will try. The PCM (computer) uses the OD light for trans problems, same as it uses the Check Engine light for engine problems. When the OD light flashes it means that the computer has determined from the sensors that it monitors that something in the trans didn't happen within programed parameters. (something slipped, something is shorted etc.) It places the trans in what's commonly called limp mode, it increases the hydraulic pressure, which may cause harsh shifting and some trans's start in 3rd gear from a stop. Some also reduce engine power. Not all computers were programed exactly the same. The purpose is to get you back for repairs. When it flashes the OD light a code is stored which refers to the problem. Not all code readers can read trans (DTC) codes. The cheaper OBD 2 can't. It depends on the code reader, how to read the code. Mine requires it to be plugged in then the key turned on or engine started. When you turn the engine off it will reset the computer and stop the OD light from flashing (it doesn't fix the problem, it may go away till it happens again) but the code is still stored in memory and still can be read by the proper reader. You may know some of this, I only said it in case you didn't. Hope it helps some.

So if I understand than the when the light is flashing don't turn the truck off to check the code. And when you shut the truck off after it flashes then it dose reset the code right. Dude thanks so muck I'll get the best code reader I can find and use it. Again thanks.

No, when you shut it off it only resets the computer but the code remains stored in memory, the codes can only be erased by a code reader or by disconnecting the battery for about an hour. Sorry guess I didn't explain correctly.

In order to read transmission codes you need a OBDII scanner that is capable. Most of the DIY scanners out on the market do not have that capibility. The Snap-ON MT2500 series scanner has that capability but its a $1K tool that most DIY guys don't have or another option is the Autoenginuity OBDII PC/Palm scan tool that has enhanced capabilities.
