I drove from NY to FL, the BEST MPG I got was 17.567. Now I have the 3V, flowmaster muffler, side exit tailpipe, and averaged 85mph the whole way. Around town, if I see 12-13 that's amazing. Usually it's 11.8-12mpg
Stock 4.0 V6, I usually get 12.5 - 13.5 city and 23 - 25highway. I use Royal Purple full synthetic lubricants in my motor, trans, diffs, and trans case. I use an oil additive called Xtra-Lube by Bell Performance in my motor and diffs, I use Bosch D+ oil filters due to their 5 micron ratings. My truck is AWD and I attribute my decent MPGs to my maintenance and driving habits.
I have stock tire size Kelly safari ats no lift yet but I get 16 in the streets with keeping the rpms below 2k, on the highway I get around 21 to 24. Being 17 you want to drive like a bat out of he'll but with a Explorer it's impossible thank God gas is only 2.59 a gallon for us here in Florida. I did a burn out for maybe 10 seconds mpg dropped from 16 to 14....
its hard to throw out a name brand with another name brand... he never said what flowmaster he has... the only flowmaster I have experience with is the 40 series I had one on my 1999 roush stage 2 f-150 5.4 w/ novi 2000 SC... 3" single catback and sounded better than anything in its class that I have ever heard... and cut off the stock mufflers on my 2004 cobra and welded in 2 40 series and it was night and day and sounded mean... but that car was mean before the swap... I dont mind interior drone if it sounds good and you can always turn up the radio... I have a friend with a 4.7 ram with a magnaflow no idea what model but it sounds like turds... I wish I could have found a 4.6l ex because exhausts on the 4.0l all sound like mickey mouse farts
Most of my driving is 70mph cruising and I drive it like its stolen and every tank is between 18.5-19.4 sumerblend, every week after 350-400 miles.... 235/65/17's with the 373 gears... winter is more like 16-17
21 mpg driving to work (11l/100kms), the trip is 10km to the city and another 5 in the city. Pulling a 3200 lbs 19 foot trail cruiser hybrid and a truck full of gear, the wife, and 2 kids 400kms one way over the long weekend I averaged 9.5 mpg (24l/100kms), cruising at 100km/h. It was like pulling a giant brick with a head wind. 07 stock V6.
Stock '98 SOHC 4.0 4x4. 18.6 city/22.4 highway as measured with my UltraGuage. Cleaned and/or replaced MAF, IAC, PCV, plugs/wires, etc... and run an AEM hi-flow air filter (non-oiled). Also run Mobil-1 full synth Hi-Mileage 5w-30 with the Mobil-1 Extended Performance M1-301 filter. Running Goodyear Wrangler Radials 235/75R/15 stock sized tires. No complaints.
Stock 2000 with auto 5 speed V-6 and AWD/4HI/4LO. Live in the mountains and plenty of hills. OD off unless I'm on flat ground which is rare and I do 17.5 mpg. I've only had it about a month and a half or so and haven't had it on the Hwy yet. I do drive like an ole bat, always do the speed limit and glide down hills.
I was told I could disconnect something from the AWD and boost it a 1/2 to 1 mpg.
Has anyone done this or heard of it?

Sounds like you are talking about the brown wire mod and if you do this for long periods of time you burn out the transfer case... This mod was devised so people with v8 awd could do burnouts, donuts and because there is no 2wd low function when pulling something heavy like a boat out of the water on a steep incline... The 4.0 is not awd it is automatic 4wd so the front wheels only drive under power when the rears slip but you cant turn off the 4wd system but low 2 would be nice from time to time... This mod will not increase milage it just puts more wear on the electronic clutch... You can keep it in OD as long as its not searching for gears this alone should net you more mpg now when you are on hills and towing you turn it off... I never turned off OD on my old 98 or my new 07 even when towing because it never searched for gears "constant shifting under steady power" using my obd2 to monitor shifting 5th gear does not even come into play until i am over 40mph'ish
