Is it very large, there is often a very large one that goes right in the middle of the case between sections?

Each clutch pack has one. The 2 servos on the sides have them. They hold the covers in place. The rear one is very hard to install, and remove. It holds the rear shaft. The one Don is referring to is near the center support.

I wasn't positive that the 5R had that also. The AOD was the first to do have that, they used to have a little spring that got left out sometimes.

i did not mess with the clutch packs. i intstalled the small one holding the rear shaft,(pita) and the very large one in the center.. yet i still have one medium size snap ring left??

That's pretty big. It might have come off of a clutch pack. In order to remove one of them, you have to compress the plates since there are springs putting pressure on it.

i thought about that but how come the clutches did not come out...they all looked ok, could this cause a noise like i was describing

i just went to the ford dealer on lunch, it looks like the extra one goes behind the the first metal band all the way in the back of the tranny, when i took it apart the second time i didn't take that last band out but it goes behind that according to the picture i got, now it looks like it all has to come apart again

That looks like a locking ring for a clutch pack, in one of the drums.

Those things have spring tension pressing against them, and don't usually pop out on their own.

yea it looks like one but the clutch packs are all intact and went back together smoothly

is it the one from the reverse drum ? can u measure it I have mine in pieces right now rev clip is 110mm id
int clutch is 115mm id

do you know how many are in the trans and where they go i will measure it if i can, i did not take the clutches apart and i have one medium sized snap ring left over
