How much would you pay to run the X?

I didn't buy my X for the gas mileage. If prices go to high, I'll buy a motorcycle to get around on. My wife's car gets decent gas mileage so we use it alot. Besides it's paid for, that off sets the gas prices. Other wise, I'll have a car payment, higher insurance rates, higher personal property taxes, just to get a few extra miles per gallon, don't think so.

At $2.25/gallon, to break even with the $6500 needed to gain that extra 27mpg on the highway, I would need to buy 2889 gallons of gas.

I would have to drive that Jetta for 78,000 miles to break even on the 27 mpg gain

My wife and i have talked about it, and here's what i(we) came up with-

If it ever breaks $2 a gallon here, im getting a motorcycle. No, not the latest high zoot 05 model GSXCBRninja or whathaveyou, im talking the cheap ass 80's model $1000 variety. You can ride here year round... you just have to pick and choose days in the winter. It will be mainly just to get me to work for cheap. Even going this route, it will take 10 months to pay for itself even though it will get 50mpg vs. the 10mpg my X gets now. Here's how i figured it...

210 miles a week avg.
cost per week explorer-------$40
cost per week motorcycle----$8

cost per month explorer------$160
cost per month motorcycle---$32

cost per year explorer--------$1920
cost per year motorcycle-----$384

Of course, this doesnt take into account maint. costs like tires, clutches, etc. And i also didnt figure in the extra cost of insurance for the bike... mainly because its only gonna be around $200 per year for liability.

If gas gets over 2.50 for 87 around Blacksburg or at the Sterling Price Costco (currently 1.86 at Costco compared to 2.06 in the surrounding area). I will seriously consider selling this truck and getting a new (used) car. Probably an Accord or Camry, I had a Camry before and loved it before I killed it (RIP).

Truth is gas around VT is pretty cheap, and I doubt this truck will last much more than the three years I will be at Tech considering its already pretty beat up at almost 150k. So I am probably in until my Ex dies.

I would pay any price, I got to get around. I mean even if it was 20 bucks a gallon, people still got to pay, to get though life, its not really a choice. The most I ever paid was something around 2.90-2.99, if any of you guys ever moved to Cali you guys would die at the when you saw the prices. :roll:

Gas has gone up to $1.85 here.
It peaked around $2.00 then dropped way down to about $1.70, but it is on the rise again.

It's currently $1.99 for 87 here in Jamestown. I voted $2.50...anything above that and i walk. I would switch to my lebaron but I can't afford insuring 2 vehicles and i currently have a loan on the x so i guess i gotta have insurance on it.

ill pay whatever it costs to be pimpin in the x, i have always had a thing for just driving around. so i burn up gas for no reason. we pay about 1.70 something here right now at walmart with 3 cents discount with the card. try to save some money

$2.20 for 92 at 7-11. That's the second cheapest (first being AMPM :thumbdwn
