How To: 4.0L OHV MAF upgrade....

Thanks Streetrod. I was thinking odb2. I did think the stock maf was pretty darn small on the ohv's. I guess I could be wrong there also.

Ok a little more info for you helpfull folks.

4.0L V-6 (Explorer )
Bored .030 over
Hypereutectic pistons
Comp Cam 49-422-8
1995 Heads
Comp Valve Springs
Delta Cams Rocker Arm Assembly`s
Smith Brothers Pushrods
Ported & polished 10:1 compression heads
Balanced rotating assembly
BBK throttle body (do not know size/part #)
stock air box w/K&N filter
JBA ceramic coated headers
Flowaster 40 series muffler with NO cat
92 Ranger ECM
Diablo chip w/custom tune
4500 lb truck
4.56 gears with a Spartan Lunchbox locker in a Explorer 8.8 31spline rear

The chip was tuned off of data logged from the truck by the tuner. Also the chip from day one was quirky (says the original owner) would throw stray TPS fault codes and on a warm re-start would stumble and throw a TPS code then run fine. Added fun the engine was in a rollover and sat upside down for 5-10 hours. Checked the condition of the sensors and replaced the IAT sensor as it was fouled.

Is the motor going in to your 91 Ranger? If so, keep the rangers elecronics, and swap out lower and upper intakes if they are different. Get the motor installed, and take it for tuning to someone that can work with odb1, as Streetrod suggested. There is really nothing crazy with your motor, but tuning would help, for sure.

If your using an automatic trans, you will need idle increased.
Also, depending what the motor came out of, the headers might not mate directly to your current exhaust.

You will have fun with this motor.

sorry the Ranger was already a 4.0L truck so same engine , engine is already in truck . The motor had been installed in a 92 Ranger , header collector fit like a glove :-) . The power gain was noticeable even with the old engine in the box of the truck! Not sure if the BBK will stay on , by reading and seat of the pants it moves the torque curve up rpm band , not quite sure if the cam and chip will be enough to keep me happy there.

Just said to hell with the BBK tb as it does not properly work at full throttle, I will mod my cable and re-install it at some later time. Drove 58 miles round trip with a 1400 ft elevation gain @ 55 ish mph (turn around was @ max gain) with a 275lb passenger for 18 mpg! Tires fyi 33x12.50x15 Duratracs . That was chip in BBK tb on running 89 octane gas at 78F outside temperature. The chip threw a check light on constant for the last couple of miles on the outbound leg but did not have a code after 2 re-starts. For what that is worth, I am very happy with the economy though there was a lack of power with that combo ( why I am changing it up ) will test with stock tb and no chip .
