How to: 4x4 high in a 95-96 4x4 Explorer

Just another thought... I believe I explained a 95/96 in the comprehensive brown wire mod thread. Might want to refer back there if it'll help.

When the switch is in the OFF postion, meaning you have 2WD, 4Auto is 2WD, 2LO (with the front axle locked), is it safe to run if as if it were in normal mode, going 75MPH on the highway, ect?...given that the OEM switch is still in 2WD.

Thing is I ran 2 LEDs to let me know when the switch is in either one of the "ON" positions...wouldn't want to forget to put the switch back in Normal mode, or drain the battery...should I disconnect the LEDs I hooked up, if one is going to stay on during "Normal Mode"? :o

yes.....on toggle switches i use when i have mine in the off postion there is no light as to not frain the battery. If the switch is in the on position were there is no 12v on the wires they are just hooked together then it should not drain the battery.

Ditto. The LEDs won't hurt anything by themselves. However, should you leave the BWM switch set to the 4high position, unless the power source is also switched (a simple thing to change with another relay from a switched source) the transfer case clutch coil will drain the battery.

Personally, I would install a relay between the power source and the switch, then use the stereo switched source to trigger the relay. That way, no matter where you have the BWM switch set, when you turn the truck off, you won't drain the battery.

awesome post. something i would have done before one of the clutch plates shattered and shot out the side of the tcase in the middle of the desert 100 miles from home. I just swapped in a 1354 :p

I just did this like the guide said and nothing happened. When the swich is in either on position it acts just like it woud normaly and when the swich is off it still dosent have 2 Lo. I used a SPDT swich i got from radioshack.

First, did you use an on-on switch, or an on-off on?

Second, can you draw a schematic of exactly how you wired it up? That would help out a LOT....

New Problem

Ok so I had everthing wired up all nice and stuff, problem is now, that I cant get 4WD anything in any mode of the switch or OEM switch. Everthing is 2WD, or 2LO...any ideas anyone? :(

Yuppers... You're not getting poiwer to the transfer case. Something is out of whack... start checking with a 12V test light to see where the power flow stops. Set the switch to 4high, key on, engine idling, and see if you've got juice into and out of the switch.

There's the problem right there... You've got your wires crossed. Swap the 12V source wire with the wire with the brown wire to the driver's side and you'll be good to go!!

I was hoping that it would be something simple thanx

I changed the wire and now I think that i still have 4 auto and now 4 Hi but i still dont have 2 Lo, Is there something i missed i thought when the swich was off i had 2 Hi and 2 Lo with the front axle engaged.

With the BWM switch in the OFF position, yes, the OEM 4wd switch will give you 2high, 2high with front axle engaged, and 2low with front axle engaged. By interrupting power flow to the transfer case clutch coil, the transfer case cannot lock.

ok this is a bump but that or start a new thread.....i have an idiotic question....but anyway. Ok so this past weekend i took the dash all apart to find that i didnt have the proper crewdriver head for those torx heads......so i then took out the drivers seat and to my surprise more carpet....:D......but once the seat is out what is the best way to get to the bundle of wires underneath it?..

pull off the plastic trim by the door sill and pull the carpet up some. then fishing the wire to the center console is fun..i used a coat hanger.

I've got two questions:

1. on the 99 Explorer Sport, the brown wire under the driver's side door jam: does it have a blue stripe, or am I looking at the wrong one?

2. As another option, would I be able to get a transfer case motor off a Ranger with true 2 wheel, and 4 high and 4 low?

Thanks.

Nope. If it's not brown, it's not the right wire.

Yes and no... yes, it will work, but you'll need to convert it to a manual shift t-case and cut holes in the floor/center console. People have done it, but for a daily driver, it's a lot of work.

Hi, there are two leads going to the switch, one going to the TCC and one going to the center console, if I power 12v to the lead going to the TCC what do i get:

ON-OFF-ON switch:
4x4auto and 12V to the lead going to the TCC this normal use or do i got
2wd is still 2wd (since the front axle is disengaged), 4auto is 4 hi, and 4 low is 4 low?

the off position: 2wd is 2wd, 4auto is 2wd (but the front axle is locked in), and 4 low becomes 2 low

Help please so i can know what mode I am.

Thx
