How to: Fog Lights with Parking Lights

Might be easier for you to explain what you did and what you wanted it to do and then we can try & see where you went wrong. Include wire color ect. , be specific.

even more confused...

I have a 1998 X Sport. I am trying to have my fog lights on with the parking lights and the high beams. I followed taxxmans directions by cutting the dark blue wire and wiring it to the brown wire off of the parking lights. When I did this the headlights were on in the parking light only position and the fog lights still didnt work with the high beams. How am I supposed to get this to work? :( Also--does anyone know if this is possible to just remove one of the pins off of the relay? I saw something about it on cardomain and now I cant find it. Thanks for any help!

Look at the pic in the above thred by pghbill.
I'm thinking that you connected the brown wire from the parking lights to the wrong end of the blue/green wire. You want the pkng lgt wire to activate the relay. So the brown wire goes to the blue/green wire that goes back into the relay.
I'm reading this and know what I mean but I dont know if I'm being clear.

hmmm....

Bill--I did exactly what you said. I put the brown wire to the relay side of the blue wire. Now my right headlight wont come on and the left headlight comes on in the parking light only position. Should I just give up?

sounds like you might have wired it wrong. You just tied into the brown wire right?

I didnt splice the wire. I wired it direct

See the little blue "quick splice" connector in the above pic.? You use that to run a wire from the brown parking light wire to the blue/green relay wire which has been cut so that the headlights dont power the relay anymore. The wire from the pkng lgt is connected to the b/g wire that comes out of the relay. The other end of the cut b/g wire is taped.
Or just do it as shown in the pic. & dont use the pkng lght wire. Which to me is preferred.

its dark now...but this should work

I did use the wrong end of the wire, but I realize that their is a difference now (after looking at my wiring diagram). It should work now, I guess I'll find out tomorrow. Thanks for all the help!! :)

The object of this exercise is to power the fog lamp relay from a source not tied to the headlights. The switch on you dash provides a path to ground so the fog relay can function.

Make sure that you cut the DARK BLUE with a LIGHT GREEN RIBBON wire and insulate the end coming out of the wiring harness. . It may help if you unmount the relay block to help trace the wires. On the '97, the fog lamp relay and the windshield washer pump relay are side by side. The pump relay is 'hot' whenever the ignition is set to "ACC" or "RUN" and is quite independent of the headlights.

I'm pleased with the arrangements. I can use the fogs as daytime running lamps. Or with the parking lamps at dawn or dusk. Or with the headlamps, hi or lo, at night.

Good luck.

Hey, PghBill

I also have a 97 so ours should the same. Using your method you can have the fogs off with the switch being off in the cab, right? Sounds pretty easy! I am just interested in having them on with the parking lights and headlights.

I just might try this. Thanks!

My arrangement is completely independent of the headlight circuits. And, by tapping the washer pump relay feed, it will operate whenever the ignition key is switched to "ACC" or "RUN". I've already used the fogs as daytime running lamps on numerous overcast days this winter (save burning all the parking lamps).

It took me an hour or so to do the mod, mainly because I took checked and doubled checked the wire colors before I cut (kinda like the old carpenter's adage - "Measure twice, cut once.")

Good luck

How difficult is it to remove the airbox cover to get to the relays in a 96? I want do do this mod, but dont know if I have time right now.

Rushing any job usually leads to problems.
Air box may have a screw or plug in the fender area to remove then it just pulls up & out. Pull HARD.
Favorite line: "I dont have time to do it right but, I have time to do it again."

just completed this mod. easy to do. works like a charm.

Is this mod different for the V8 motor?? i have 97 V8 4 door and would like to do this, if anyone has instructions on how to do this on mine, with the right color wires let me kno! thanks

I just performed Taxxman fog light mod. Works like a charm! Pretty easy

hey guys i did this and i had power on to the parking lights while doin the work. When i installed the jumper from the wire i cut to the brown wire on the parking lights, i noticed that the parking lights and the fog lights arent as bright. Has anyone else had this happen?

Help,

I can't figure out how to get the air filter box out so I can get the relay.

The air filter is held in by a screw on the fender and rubber **** on the bottom. After removing the screw(round type filter) just pull up on the air box. Its hard but it will come out.
