HOW TO: painting & taking care of rusty bumper

Got a 93 X and the bumper has god a couple pretty big rust spots on it. I was thinking about just covering them up with stickers, but I dont really wanna use that for a "fix".
What can I use to patch the rust and how would I go about painting a bumper.

I hate to be the one to tell you this but once the rust starts ther is no easy way to remove it. You should remove it by sanding other abrasion. Fill the voids with body sealer, prime and repaint it. Otherwise it will just come back.

It does help to cover it with a rust penetrating paint, but it is a temporary fix.

I'm assuming you mean rust on the outside... Onlyway to fix that would be to pick up another bumper, or cut out the sections that are rusty and spot weld (from the back) a new piece of metal in there, and use body filler to make it nice and smooth. You can look at this thread where I painted the inside of my rear bumper to stop the little rust spots that were forming. Use rustoleum Rusty Metal primer if you do paint the inside.

Usually rust on bumpers has not gone deep enough to casue damage. Personally on surface rust I have had great results from rust converters. Not the kind you can pick up at autozone. This one is highly recomended. It will take away enough to where you can have a good surface to prime. Chrome is hard to paint but if you sand it down to get a good grip epoxy primer will stick. Geting allt he way to the nickle surface is the best but without proper tools that can be a pain. If you need more info look through the message board on the site I posted above. Junk yard- new (to you) bumper. Probably cost ya 75 bucks, and less hassle. Rust is a uphill battle, and an ugly bumper is well.. ugly. Also- for about $120 bucks, you can have your bumper re-chromed and they'll grind the rust out.
