How to remove subwoofer?

I have a Ford Mach Audio System in my 98 XLT and blew my subwoofer. I took the side panel off and unscrewed the subwoofer and I can't seem to remove the speaker. I tried turning the speaker clockwise and counter and nohing.

For my part, I'd also like to know the following, in addition to the procedure for removing the subwoofer (assuming the same procedure would apply for a 1997 Eddie Bauer):

1) Is there an aftermarket sub of the same size that I could purchase and use to replace the stock sub, without having to make any modifications to the space where the sub is currently enclosed?

2) If there is no same size aftermarket sub available, what other close sizes (8 inch? 10 inch?) can be used as replacements with only very minimal modifications to the space where the sub is currently enclosed?

To remove the subwoofer you will need to remove the whole box, as there is a center bolt in the rear holding it in place
As for replcement, any 8" sub ( 4 door) should work , as long as it is the same or less mounting depth
While the box is out, you can modify it to accept a 10"
It won't improve sound much though, unless you up the power

This has been covered Im sure......but

I have the Bose system in my 94 Limited with the rear powered sub. I want a CD player..all I have is a AM/FM/ Casette....might as well be a 8 track

The specifications for my speaker system look really good on paper, I have been looking at a deck at Crutchfield with mosfet amp and 50W RMS for each of the 4 channels.....would this sound better than the original sound system if I used the harness to bypass the built in amp ?? I know I would loose the rear sub , but what I have read on other boards they say that this will still sound better than the original Bose sound system. Any input anyone....I would also gain MP3 and an Aux input for my PDA that has a ton of MP3 files on it as well.

If you replace the HU, you will need new door speakers too. With good speakers, it will sound better than the factory system with the sub.

That is what I was thinking as well, when you say "HU" you mean the Head Unit ??

If not why buy a high power deck if you are not going to use the amplifier section anyway. How do you get into the door speakers to replace them ?? does anyone have a link to sone photos ?? and what size are they ?? and while I am at it do you need to run new wires or just use the bypass harness that Crutchfield supplies ??

Sorry for so many questions.....I just like to gather as much info as possible before starting a new project.

If you shop around, and are stingy like me you can make your system sound pretty good. for less than just an expensive flashy HU. for example

this setup won't win comp, but it sounds good
also, just about any 8" sub will sound better than the stock. try to find a 8" pioneer dual voice coil, wire parallel for 4 ohm----about 25-30 bux

I blew my subwoofer also. I had the basic JBL system with an odd sized woofer (7" or 8") replacements were unavailable (used) or expensive (dealer).

I finally found www.wooferrepair.com and for $14 I purchased a replacement FOAM kit. In about 2 hours worth of work I had a fully functioning woofer again, sounds like new.

I have replaced my stock box, with and stealth box and with a JL 10" DVC. It fit perfect and sounds great. If you want to check it out, look at the link at the bottom. I have just installed thermodamp, so you can see the box perfectly.

Your EX sure does look good. That picture of the stealth box (I think it is on p. 4 of your pics) is particularly helpful / impressive. I am assuming that the black enclosure is indeed the stealth box, and not the factory box.

Since I have some experience building speaker cabinets (I've built monitors and mains for bands that I have been in), I may try to modify the stock box first, and if that doesn't work well, then I might either build one of my own or get a stealth box.

I know that the stock box had an 8" JBL... i think.... It was a long time ago that I installed the stealth. I thought about building my own box to replace the factory, but I was concerned about the air space that the sub would require. I just decided to get the box and sub as a package, makes t easier on me, and it is a hell of allot less cussing and frustating than biulding my own..

But if you do decide to build one, you gotta post pics..
