So, we've got 6-8in of snow, and the bronco is stored in the back yard. I go to drive it to the garage, and i lock the hubs, shift into 4hi and got stuck. My valiant steed came to a hault quickly. Then, i get it into 4lo and the rear was spinning in the snow at idle, i look under the truck and the front d-shaft is spinning. I thought i once had it in 4x4 but this thing is such a work of crap, i might have just been clunking for the heck of it. Below is a pic of the hub. Does it appear to be original '73 hubbage? Also, is there anyway I can undo the allen bolts w/ the tire on, and lock the hubs very manually to get it to the garage? Or do i tug it around w/ a quad?

New hubs are okay, it's just going to wait till the disk brake swap occurs.
Thanks guys!

I suppose getting stuck in the back yard is a 911 emergency! If a moderator chooses a better forum, since there isn't axles listed under the trans/tcase forum, i used my elite powers for once... :D :D

taxx had this problem last winter out at haspin acres, he didnt have the hubs put back together right and undid the allen bolts and fixed it right on the trail with the tire and what not on....

They said the same thing on rrorc...
Here's what I found...

I was able to spin the drive shaft and the axle shaft did spin. Does that mean its engaged then?

Either way, that looks like crap, and I guess a new set will be in order when the disks go on in spring.

They certainly have seen better days. Unfortunately, I've gotta take care of finishing a speech tonight for class tomorrow, yes class on sunday, but I'm going to try to get it in the garage tomorrow, w/ the outter hubs removed.

the axleshafts always spin with the driveshaft.
sounds like it isn't engaged, then, if you can turn it by hand (axle shaft isn't grabbing anything, therefore will freely spin)
sounds like the hub(s) are shot.

whew that hub looks gunked up. You might be able to clean it out and see if it will engage, but man, that's gunked. Hope you get it going.

Hey, i have a blazer and i had the same problem. Pretty much i replaced the hubs and i got 4wd back. A quad i dont think wil;l pull that out of 8 inches of snow. I tried pullin my blazer since it wont start up a very slight incline and i started to spin all 4. It was only 4 inches of snow. But hey my blazer is 7000 pounds.

I think the quad woulda had enough pull, with the bronco tires spining to get it through... But who cares! I got 'er out. I took the hub off, and tapped the locking nut hub thingy that slides into place manually, then reinstalled the outer hub in the locked position, and all was well. I'm going to leave it locked into 4x4 until spring.
