I-Rock Camaro.... hmmmm?!???

Ok, So i now have a new goal. My friend just got his 86 I-Rock on the road and is now talking all kinds of crap to me about how my truck sucks. His comment today was "haha its a ford" so I would love to put him in his place. by the summer i want my truck to be able to keep up in a race with his I-rock. could it happen? am i dreaming? Will it happen with anything less then supercharging my X? I was thinking Chip,intake,flowmasters would be a nice start. let me know.

kinda depends on how the car was optioned and how the upkeep has been. The Iroc wasn't all that fast factory, but it's still quite a bit faster then an explorer, you're gonna have to do more than a chip and exhaust to have a chance. Just have to remember, explorer's weren't built to be fast, camaro's were, it apples to oranges.

just remind that a stock 5.0 stang would kill him and that they're easier and cheaper to fix up.

His car stock only pushes 245hp? i think.. i was looking at it on the web one night with him. my v8 is 220 stock? or was it 215. anyway thats not to far offf. but his car also is like 3000lbs my truck is allmost 5000lbs. hmmm how much HP would i need? ALEC!!? anyone?

I take that back his car is stock 235 hp. and its also over 10 years old. hmmm.. this could happen! come on tax return =) i still want more info guys so please post!!! let me know what you think i should do.

take he has the 5.7 with the auto. You could either get the 5.0 with a stick or a 5.7 with the auto. but no 5.7 with a stick:confused: chevy was worried it would be too much torque for the frame. Frigging idiots

yes he has an auto 5.7. with flowmasters. thats it.. but the flowmasters are old. few years. Im really thinking i could do this now =) hmmmmm

it is likely that a mid 80s iroc 350 in even an above average state of repair is actually making quite a few hp less than when it was brand new. lets say it still puts down between 200 and 220, his next big problem is going to be with a 1984 automatic tranny that has probably been ceaselessy abused for all those years (same goes for the newer one if its been replaced) i've never met someone who drove one of those who didn't beat on it! in all likelyhood his tranny will be holding him back pretty darn good. i would make predictions about how fast he would run a 1/4 or 0-60 but there is just too much speculation and i don't want to start an argument.

i think if you get the baumann and the other mods you have listed you will have a fair chance at taking him, but if his car is in great shape or has some secret mods (which is possible because it does have exhaust-- and secret mods are more common than anyone thinks.;) ) you will need more to keep up. but hey, if you lose its no big deal because he has a car with a bigger engine and you have a truck.

all in all- you can do this and it will be fun to try win or lose
 






All he has is flowmasters.. thats it.. i know this cause i worked on the car with him. hmm.. what order should i do my mods? intake chip flowmasters?

just do them, a lot of raving is the driver.... you can put jeff gordon in a baja 1000 truck and ivan stewart "ironamn" in gordon's nascar.... they will both be totally lost, they are out of THEIR element.....

your a little off on the weight of both vehicles. my 2wd X weighed 4300 lbs. on the scales with 3/4 tank of gas. a V8 AWD's weight should be around the 4500-4600 neighbor hood. the IROC was very heavy for its size, and thats one of the main reasons that stock for stock it would get spanked by a MAS air mustang. most IROC's ran around 3700lbs. i had a 82 Z28 with a built 350 and TH350 tranny, and i had to do quite a bit of "lightening" to get it under 3600.

for the most part, you both have the same horsepower. you are roughly 700-800lbs heavier than he is. however, you have 3:73 gears while he has 3:20-somethings. this will tip the scales in your favor bigtime. you will need 70 more hp to beat him, minus 15-20 for gear compensation which puts you at, lets say, 50hp.

do a custom chip, exhaust, intake, throttle cable mod, and stage 4 Baumann. you still wont beat him in a full 1/4 mile, but on the street you will pull him off the line like he is your b!tch. keep the race short, and it is possible that you can shame him with these mods.
 






His 0-60 is probably around 7 seconds and 1/4 mile probably around 15.3-15.5. You can definately beat him with some mods and proper gearing.

I don't know much about easy 5.0 mods besides the normal intake, exhaust, chip. You could buy my nitrous kit from me and get a custom dual program chip and for sure beat him ;) Nitrous is the cheapest way to go.

motor trend has the 86 IROC 350 tested as follows:

0-60.............7 seconds

1/4mile.........15.4 seconds

now remember, this is brand-spanking new. 350's arent known for holding their compression over a long time like the 302 is. also, i agree with drew, in that his tranny is more than likely seen better days. chances are a showroom new IROC of the same vintage would smoke his @ss. and also, that 15.4 1/4 mile was with a high trap speed. off the line they were pretty slow. you actually have a better chance than i thought.

like i said, keep the run as short as possible.

do these mods, and you will own him. period.
 






whats a stage 4 Baumann? shift kit?any info on this would be great. as far as chip im getting a chip from brian. KKM intake. flowmasters. =)
