ok so after much thinking and some amount of reading i have sort of a custom 2nd gen front end in mind. since everyone knows that you cant use just spindles to lift the front end of a 4wd 2nd gen, cause the CVs will have a chit fit (plus the fact there is no hole for a CV to go through the spindle). i had the crazy idea of going ahead and getting the Pro Comp spindles and making a hole for the CV and converting everything on the new spindle (using my stock stuff) to like a 4wd type spindle. and then getting the Porsche 944 CV's cause ive read somewhere those will work on a X and can go past the 22* angle that a stock for CV can. am i crazy?

yes.... do a SAS :D

how much are those cvs anyway and will they custom make them to fit?

Sounds logical, but I'd just call up CoryL and have him help me with an SAS ;)

hahaha, SAS as long as i can get funded ;) i found 944 CV's for $75 a side, unsure of how much they would cost to be retrofitted. and then $500 for the spindles (or cheaper im not sure how much the really cost) and prob about $50-75 for the new hole in the spindle. and i think that covers it. so im lookin at around $700 prob $800 with miscellaneous expenses.

If it works out more power to you!

Before you go ahead with it I would doublecheck the driveline geometry and make sure the CVs will work.

Alec, how would i go about checking the drivline geometry? one more idea to run by yall, do you think the 944 joints would be good for only 3" or could i possibly squeeze 3.5"-4" of lift out of them?

You should look at the lift spindles vs yours and see how they're gonna affect the CV angles.

good call Alec, ok does anyone have a picture of a 2nd gen 4wd/awd spindle??? ive only been able to find pics of 2wd spindles, ive found some pictures but not a good close up one. if anyone can hel it would be much appreciated. the way i see it now, goin 3" is only gunna put a little more angle on the CV than a 2" TT is gunna, so the 944 would more than likely be perfect for a 3"-4" lift, IN THEORY

I'm not sure there's enough room there for you to bore it out and still have enough strength. Lemme take both pix into Photoshop, superimpose one on the other, and I'll get back to you....

The lift spindles look doubled up around the hub. Theo, you should be able to take out that 2wd hub and bore the spindle out.

OK, I took both pictures into photoshop, resized them so they are the same scale, and superimposed the 4WD hole on the extended 2WD spindle. Not a lot of meat left at the bottom.......

And how are you going to bore into cast steel and not weaken it? This looks like a disaster waiting to happen.. (But don't take my word for it, I only set the curve on the last Mechanical Design Test ;))

Unless you asked some company to somehow recast it with more steel around there, I dont think it will happen. I also dont think that is possible with the rim curve, but if it would work, they could probably sell alot ;)

well just shoot me down then Hokie :p never really thought about it like that, im still in the very beggining of planning stages right now, i might head over to Down East Offroad and see if they can make custom spindles for me. ori could call superlift and see if i can talk them into sending me a "replacement" set of spindles that i would pay for of course. this is still a good month-2 months off so i have plenty of time. jsut wanted to throw this out as an idea. anyone have any idea as to how much semi-custom spindles would cost?

Your best bet would to get the superlift spindles... serioulsy though. Porsche CV's custom machined to your application is going to be expensive. Not worth it for the minimal lift you're gonna get

But, at least you could say you have porsche parts in your explorer :D:D:D

sounds like a cool idea

What is your ultimate goal here?

I would imagine that by the time you get custom spindles and Porsche halfshafts made up, you would have as much in it as an SAS, yet, you would have no suspension improvement at all over stock.

Where did you hear this Porsche 944 stuff? I have never heard of it, and am always interested in new techniques.
